3. Understanding the Carbon Cycles
Carbon moves between plants and animals, earth, atmosphere and oceans in a
continuous cycle.
4. The atmosphere is now
overflowing with large amount of
carbon dioxide. Some is
absorbed by the oceans, some is
absorbed by plants and soil. The
carbon that remains in the
atmosphere absorbs heat,
preventing it from radiating out
into space.
It took hundreds of millions of
years to sequester carbon deep
in the earth and under the ocean
floor, and humans have released
much of that carbon into the
atmosphere during the last
century.
The Lopsided Carbon Cycle-Climate change
5. Humans are also destroying
forests, releasing more carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere
and reducing the number of
plants that absorb it from the
atmosphere.
Without this trapped heat the
Earth would not be habitable.
Too much heat, and
the climate will change and
become less habitable. The
same applies to the oceans,
where increased carbon
changes the
chemistry of sea water, making
the oceans less habitable and
killing sea life.

1.More Work, Less Energy
For many, a computer is the central tool at
work. Optimizing the energy settings for
computers can be more than a modest
energy saver. Set computers to energy-
saving settings and shut down when you
leave for the day (“standby” settings will
continue to draw power even when not in
use).
By plugging hardware into a power strip
with an on/off switch (or a smart power strip
), the whole desktop setup can be turned off
at once
Printers, scanners, and other peripherals
that are only used occasionally can be
unplugged until they’re needed.
(make sure to power down inkjet printers
before killing the power—they need to seal
their cartridges).
And of course, turn off lights in spaces that
are unoccupied.
11. Saving Electricity Tips
1. Turn off your fan, toilet lights
when they are not being used.
2. Do not leave your television etc in
in standby mode as when they are on, so it is a
serious waste of energy when a device is left
constantly on standby.
3. Replace your inefficient incandescent lamps
with energy efficient CFL bulbs when life is due.
Replace halogen spotlights with LED
Spotlights.
4. Switch to cook from gas than on hotplates or
oven than from Electricity.
If you use a lot of Oven cooking, switch to a
microwave. A microwave cuts cooking times by
up to 30%.
5. Heat only as much water as you require for drinks
and cooking. If you keep forgetting, purchase an
energy efficient eco Kettle.
(750ml capacity like in Hotels is recommended,)
Consider using Hot and Cold dispenser. This
saves 40% of your boiled water bills!

Save on electricity at home by knowing how to do it.
12. 6. Use a microwave to reheat food and cook small
portions.
Although a microwave uses a lot of power, it
does so over a very short time without heating
up the Utensils
7. Service your air Con at least every 6 months. A
blocked Filter and Blower unit consumed 40%
more Electricity! Increase your Air-con
temperature as much as you can. For every
degree you increase from 16C to 25C, you can
save up to 5% on your Air-con bill.
8. Vacuum clean the condenser coils at the back
or underneath your fridge. Accumulated dust
reduces their efficiency by up to 25% adding
that cost to your electricity bill.
9. Open your fridge only when necessary as
every time you do so, you let in 20°% of heat!.
(Note: Minimize pushing in leftover food to keep
it fresh, cold before throwing it away the next
day. This is a very common practice not
realized!)
Save on electricity at home by knowing how to do it.
13. Lean Electrisave
If you really need to keep food in the Fridge, let
it cool down first.
Consider getting a Freezer as Freezer uses
different gas that have a lower temperature
than a Fridge thus consumes lesser
Electricity once cold! I have saved 10 %
through this and your payoff will get back
the investment.
10. Alternatively you can invest in a Lean
Electrisave Power Factor improver.

This innovative device slowly stores energy
and releases it when you turn on Air-cons,
fridge, lightings and motor operated
devices to reduce pulling of energy from
TNB!
One great way to find out how much electricity
household appliances uses is look at your
meter when some one turns on the device.

15. Throw a Water Bottle in Your Toilet Tank!
How to save Water every time you flush
The average home, the toilet
accounts for 28% of water use.
Weight a bottle with an inch or so of
sand or pebbles and fill it the rest
the way with water. Seal it and
place in your toilet tank away for the
operating mechanisms.
Putting a 1.5 liter bottle will be
saving 25% of water on every flush!
Make sure there is enough water
left to ensure proper flush use.
Most toilets have more than
enough room unless they are
already low flow with short and long
flush design.
16. Consider Installing a Solar Water Heater

Because of their relatively low cost and simplicity, for those living in moderate
climates with good sunshine available, the Batch heater type is probably the
best value for heating domestic water.
17. 2.Digitize In the “digital age” we still consume
enormous amounts of mashed up
papers, most of which gets used once
or twice and then tossed or recycled.
The greenest paper is paperless!, so
keep things digital. Read newspaper
online.
The more you do online, the less you
need paper. Keep files on computers
instead of in file cabinets.
Review documents onscreen rather
than printing them out.
Send emails instead of paper letters.
Green print helps eliminate blank
pages from document printing and
can also convert to PDF for paperless
document sharing.
18. 3.Don’t Be a Paper Pusher
Replace sending letters and
circulating memos by going digital as
far as situation permits you.
When buying printer paper, look for
recycled paper with a high
percentage of post-consumer content
and minimum chlorine bleaching.
Even recycled paper gobbles up a
great deal of energy, water and
chemical but is environmentally
better than virgin paper from pulp
tree.
Print on both sides of the page when
appropriate and use misprints as
notepaper. Try to choose printers and
photocopiers that do double-sided
printing. If your office ships
packages, reuse boxes & shredded
waste paper as packing material.

20. 4.Greening the Commute
An average of 3.7 billion hours and 23
billion gallons of gas are wasted in rush
hour traffic each year in America.
We can ease some of this strain by
carpooling, taking public transport, biking,
walking, or a creative combination thereof.
If there’s no good way to phase out your
car, consider getting a hybrid, electric
vehicle, motorcycle, scooter, or using a
bicycle. Some employers are even giving
a bonus to bike and carpool commuters
and special perks to hybrid drivers.
For those who think bike riding is for kids
and tattooed couriers, consider a high-tech
folding bike or an electrically assisted one
(see below for more).

5.Green Sleeves
You might be amazed how sharp work
clothes from thrift stores can look. If you
buy new, get clothes made with organic
or recycled fibers. Avoid clothes that
need to be dry cleaned, and if they so
demand it, seek out your local "green"
dry cleaner. See

tactics on greening those work duds.
Consider buying Used

Don’t throw it all away
A tight fit, out of trend, or changing
fashion threaten to separate you from
your favorite dress shirt.
If the condition is perfectly good, you
can always donate or Free cycle it.
Don’t just abandon your old friend to the
waste-stream!
28. 6.Work From Home
Instant messaging, video conferencing
tools make effective telecommuting a
reality.
If you can telecommute, hold phone
conferences, take online classes, or
otherwise work from home,
It'll save you the time you would have
spent on the trip as well as sparing the air.
Telecommuting works for 44 million
Americans (not to mention the Tree
Hugger staff).
Also, consider the possibility of working
four ten-hour days instead of five eight-
hour days (a consolidated workweek),
cutting the energy and time spent on
commuting by 20% and giving you some
lovely three-day weekends.
29. 7.Use Green Materials
Although some paper use can't be
avoided, use recycled paper and
envelopes processed using eco-
friendly methods. Pens and pencils
are available in recycled materials,
and refillable pens and markers are
preferable to disposable ones. Use
biodegradable soaps, enzymes and
recycled paper or cloth towels in the
bathroom and kitchen, and provide
biodegradable cleaners for the
custodial staff. Buy in bulk so that
shipping and packaging waste are
reduced, and reuse the shipping
boxes.
Recycling, and recycled
replacements are cheaper than new
ones.
30. 7.Use Green Materials
Say No! to Plastic Bags & Polystyrene Containers!
Bring you own Shopping bags. Yes…Plastic bags create rubbish
& not environmental friendly.
GEORGE TOWN:
Penang will make every Monday a “No
plastic bag day” in a bid to become the
country’s first ‘green’ state. It is learnt
that shoppers who do not bring their
own reusable bags will be charged 20
sen for each plastic bag when making
purchases from shopping complexes
and hypermarkets.
The money collected from the sale of
plastic bags will go to the fund to help
the state’s hardcore poor, a state
government source said.
Penang CM stated that the local
councils had spent about RM57.6
million, early a third of its
income in year 2007, to pay for

36. 9. Lunch Time
Bringing lunch to work in
reusable containers is likely
the greenest (and healthiest)
way to eat at work. Getting
delivery and takeout almost
inevitably ends with a
miniature mountain of
packaging waste. But if you
do order delivery, join
coworkers in placing a large
order (more efficient than
many separate ones). Also,
bring in a reusable plate,
utensils, and napkins. If you
do go out for lunch, try
biking or walking instead of
driving.
37. 10.Get Others in on the Act
Share these tips with your
colleagues.
Arrange an office carpool or
group bike commute.
Arrange / Trade shifts and job
duties so that you can work four
long days instead of five short
ones.
Request to get a coffee/tea
dispenser for the break room
and make sure everyone has a
small recycling bin so that
recycling is just as easy as
throwing paper away.
Bring in a mug or glass from
home and keep some handy for
visitors so that you reduce or
eliminate use of paper cups.

40. Why I go green
As a keen DIY person, I like little devices that do neat
things utilizing your own energy at the same time
saves money.
I only buy or build gadgets that can pay for
themselves and even see a bit of return over the long
haul. This usually means I look for energy-efficient
gadgets.
What’s nice is that many of these gadgets that adds
value, saves money in the long run as well as make a
great impact on saving the Environment.
