  4. 4. Thai Nguyen province <ul><li>Total rice land : 70,144 ha </li></ul><ul><li>Rice household: 183,543 (69.5%) </li></ul><ul><li>Average area: 0.4 ha/household </li></ul><ul><li>Productivity: 4.49 ton/ha </li></ul>
  5. 5. Phu Tho province <ul><li>Total rice land : 71,408 ha </li></ul><ul><li>Rice household: 223,297 (69,5%) </li></ul><ul><li>Average area : 0.3 ha/ household </li></ul><ul><li>Productivity : 4.78 ton/ha </li></ul>

Achievements in the first year <ul><li>SRI is increasingly applied over a larger area and by a larger number of farmers </li></ul><ul><li>Local government leaders and farmers recognized and appreciated the benefits of SRI (social, economic, environment, solidarity .) </li></ul><ul><li>SRI fields and a number of farmers applying SRI increased. There were 534 farmer households applied SRI on 40.7 ha (in 15 communes) </li></ul>

Achievement in the first year (cont) <ul><li>The capacity of technician staff and farmers has been improved </li></ul><ul><li>8 technical staff members were trained to become provincial trainers. 120 farmers were trained to become farmer trainers </li></ul><ul><li>Farmer-trainers applied SRI in their plots, took part in implementing SRI demonstration models, and provided guidance and technical support to other farmers </li></ul>

Achievement in the first year (cont) <ul><li>Increasing profits for farmers </li></ul><ul><li>In comparison to conventional practices, seed reduced by 63- 67%, chemical fertilizers by 22-33%, pesticide sprays reduced by 1 – 2 times. Rice yields increased by 9%, net profits by 11,1% - 13,8%. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Achievement in the first year (cont) <ul><li>Active support from local </li></ul><ul><li>government </li></ul><ul><li>SRI program has received active support from local government, both in terms of policy and budgeting . </li></ul>

Achievement in the first year (cont) <ul><li>Cooperation among farmers was improved </li></ul><ul><li>Through: </li></ul><ul><li>Field experiments, demonstration models, field-day workshops, exposure visits etc. </li></ul><ul><li>22 SRI farmers’ groups were established and managed by farmers. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Key Challenges <ul><li>Fear of farmers of SRI innovations: too young seedlings, transplanting technique, drying out fields; weeding… </li></ul><ul><li>High-yield varieties and high inputs for higher productivity without concerns of environmental protection & net incomes </li></ul>

Strategies to address the challenges <ul><li>Develop strategic communication activities to promote application and dissemination of SRI </li></ul><ul><li>Organize FFS/technical training for local technician staff and farmers </li></ul><ul><li>Expanding of SRI on a larger scale (over 10 ha/demonstration field) </li></ul>

Strategies to address the challenges (cont) <ul><li>Advocate the district and provincial authorities to support for SRI application on a large scale </li></ul><ul><li>Conduct TOT for technical staff at the district level </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage farmers to design and use tools for weeding </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage farmers to use bio-fertilizer </li></ul><ul><li>Gender mainstreaming in program activities </li></ul>
  15. 15. Expectation towards 2010 <ul><li>6,500 household farmers apply SRI on 3,700 ha ( 10% of paddy land of Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen provinces) </li></ul>

Lesson learnt <ul><ul><li>Raising awareness and changing habits of farmers through FFS, demonstration models, farmers’ field experiments, exposure visits, and communication. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Maximize use of local potential resources through participation of local government agencies, cooperatives, mass organizations and farmers’ groups </li></ul></ul>
