Editor's Notes
INTRODCTORY SLIDE:
Get your audience’s attention with excitement and a compelling story!
*Make a personal connection to Six Month Smiles. For clinicians, examples of this could be sharing your experience taking the course, how many cases you have treated, or the details of your most recently treated case highlighting their chief complaint and end result. What did the patient tell you when their braces came off? What did it do for his/her self-esteem?
*For consultants, examples of this could be sharing your client’s experience at the two day course, the teams’ excitement around offering it to patients, or the increased profitability associated with implementing Six Month Smiles. Specific and startling statistics often grab the audience’s attention (e.g. Dr. Smith averaged just 2 cases a month last year and increased his annual productivity by $96,000!)
DESCRIBE THE PATIENT AND THE DISPARITY:
Adult patients with crooked teeth are in every practice, and current options are limited in their ability to help treat these patients. Not every patient is appropriate for veneers or aligners. There is a significant ‘gap’ in what adult patients want (straight, healthy teeth in a realistic amount of time) and what is available to them.
To engage your audience, ask them how they would treat Linda (left) with their current service offerings. (Background: Linda is a 55 yo female who after putting her children through college now has some disposable income. She shared that she was hesitant to smile for the last 30 years due to her crowded teeth.)
PATIENT HIGHLIGHT: DON
Don is 28 yo male who presented with the obvious chief complaint of rotated canines and tucked back laterals. These rotated cuspids (or “fangs” as friends would call them) detracted from his overall physical appearance. After Six Month Smiles, Don’s smile had symmetry and harmony. His gingival margins were leveled, and he was able to smile with confidence. Don’s overall appearance was improved significantly.
“Dentists who do not provide Six Month Smiles do not have a realistic option for patients like Don.”
DEFINING SIX MONTH SMILES:
Feel comfortable reading the slide, sharing the following :
Most Six Month Smiles cases are completed in 4 to 9 months.
Six Month Smiles has been developed specifically for General Dentists with limited or no orthodontic experience.
3 REASONS TO BECOME A SIX MONTH SMILES PROVIDER
1. EASY: No previous orthodontic experience needed. Expertly positioned clear brackets come set in custom bonding trays - ready for 1-step seating.
2. EFFECTIVE: Six Month Smiles award- winning clear brackets and shape-memory wires are specifically engineered for optimum and predictable
short-term orthodontic results.
3. PATIENTS WANT IT: Short treatment times and clear braces give patients the most attractive option to finally have the smile they’ve always wanted.
SIX MONTH SMILES IS EASY:
No previous orthodontic experience needed. Expertly positioned clear brackets come set in custom bonding trays - ready for 1-step seating.
Dentists with no ortho experience should know that this will be one of the easier procedures they deliver. Many say, “It’s as easy as seating a bleaching tray.” Most will bracket a full arch in less than 10 minutes.
Key words to include: stress-free, dentist-friendly, GP-friendly.
PATIENT TRAY KIT:
From “braces on” to “braces off”, all the disposable materials for each patient are provided within the Patient Tray Kit. The Patient Tray Kit is the cornerstone of the Six Month Smiles System and what makes this system easy and stress-free for General Dentists. The Patient Tray Kit (the lab fee) and is $518 for a dual-arch case and $409 for a single arch case.
CLINICAL PROCEDURE I:
This slide speaks to the beginning of the actual clinical procedure. The procedure begins by opening the Patient Tray Kit, inserting the lip retractor, and etching the teeth that are going to receive a bracket. After washing off the etchant and drying the enamel, bonding agent is painted on and air-thinned. The same adhesive is placed on the back of the exposed brackets, followed by a small amount of flowable composite.
CLINICAL PROCEDURE II:
The bonding trays are then seated onto the teeth and pressure is added to ensure an intimate fit between the brackets and the enamel. Each bracket is then light-cured through the tray for approximately 5 seconds per tooth. Timing differs depending on the model of light-curing gun. The trays are then removed and the brackets remain bonded in perfect position.
ARCH WIRES:
The Six Month Smiles archwires have shape-memory. We can bend them in a variety of ways and they always regain their original shape.
These arch wires are winners of the Townie Choice Awards in 2010 and 2011.
CLEAR BRACKETS & TOOTH COLORED WIRES:
Here you can see the brackets and wires are on a patient. They are barely noticeable from a normal social distance of 2.5 feet.
These clear brackets are winners of the Townie Choice Awards in 2010 and 2011. Six Month Smiles brackets have a unique prescription (Swain prescription) that are specific for Short Term Ortho treatment goals.
SIX MONTH SMILES IS EFFECTIVE:
Six Month Smiles award-winning clear brackets and shape-memory wires are specifically engineered for optimum and predictable short-term orthodontic results.
Brackets and wires are the most effective way to move teeth efficiently and effectively. Compared to aligner treatment a broader range of patients can be treated in a realistic and predictable amount of time. Patients who’s chief complaint requires teeth to be intruded, extruded, or rotated can be helped.
SHAPE MEMORY:
Here we can see the wires in action. The arch wires drive the tooth movement. They change form to mirror the mal-positioned teeth but want to return to their ideal parabolic archway or “U” shape, bringing the teeth along. These images show how the arch is gently rounded out over the course of treatment.
COMPARISON TO ALIGNERS:
Aligners have their place in orthodontics and many GPs like to offer both to their patients. This table outlines some of the differences between these two systems. Speak to your personal experience with aligners if applicable and especially in the key areas of:
The difference in treatment times
The difference in lab costs and profitability
The difference in predictable tooth movement
“There is little debate for dentists who provide both.”
PATIENTS WANT SIX MONTH SMILES:
Offering and marketing a service that patient want can lead to higher case acceptance and practice growth. Short treatment times and clear braces give patients the most attractive option to finally have the smile they’ve always wanted.
THE MAGIC FORUMULA:
Six Month Smiles is unlike traditional orthodontics in that treatment times are between 4-9 months, on average about six months. The braces are clear and barely noticeable. This makes treatment appealing to the adult patient. Include a brief story about one of your patients or the patient of a client who was unwilling to undergo comprehensive ortho or aligner treatment and why.
PATIENT CASE REVIEW:
Mia is a 26 yo female who presented with a chief complaint of protruding central (#8) and overall asymmetry in both arches. She was getting married within the year and wanted to be able to smile on her big day.
Mia’s case is a perfect example of how Six Month Smiles is different from comprehensive ortho.
BEFORE PICTURE:
Important to note #8 protruding and overlapping with #7 and #9. She has a Class II molar relationship, and a crown on #14. The orthodontist told her it would require an extraction and more than two years of treatment.
BRACES ON APPOINTMENT:
Note the position of the arch wire and its desire to straighten out to provide symmetry (e.g. extrusion of #8).
BRACES ON IMAGES:
Top Left: Shows protruding central
Bottom Left: Shows asymmetry of maxillary arch and where conservative IPR will be conducted
MONTH 1:
The majority of the tooth movement has occurred in the first month. In the first 4 weeks, #8 has already moved and is now no longer overlapping #7 and #9. We also begin to see some extrusion on #8 as well.
Minor bends in the wire are made with Position Optimizing Pliers which limit the need to re-position brackets during treatment. See bend or ‘pop’ in the maxillary arch wire on the mesial and distal of #8. These bends will help extrude the upper right central.
MONTH 2:
Speak to the fact that #8 is now leveled and aligned with #9 and the lower incisors are showing significant symmetry and harmony. A metal quick tie is placed on #21 to help keep the wire fully engaged in the slot of the bracket.
MONTH 3:
We can now see that not only are Mia’s centrals aligned but the gingival margins have followed the tooth movement and are leveled as well. The lower arch continues to straighten out also.
MONTH 4:
Continuing to let the wires and brackets work.
BRACES OFF:
Note that the gingival margins are now at the same level. Cosmetic re-contouring was done around the upper left central (#9) for a beautiful final result. Six Month Smiles is a nice set up for additional cosmetic services like bonding and whitening.
SEQUENCE SLIDE:
This is a very powerful sequence of images that demonstrates the significant difference Six Month Smiles makes for a patient – from beginning, during, and after. Emphasize the human and emotional side of treatment. For example, asking “How can we even begin to measure the difference this made to Mia’s self-esteem and the joy she experienced on her wedding day?” or “By show of hands, how many of you can envision patients in your practice like Mia that you could potentially help?”
THE REVEAL:
When the braces come off it’s a special moment. Six Month Smiles truly changed Mia’s outlook on life. She was so genuinely appreciative for the difference it will make on her big day and every day there after.
ROI SLIDE:
The purpose of this slide is to communicate the limited start up cost (risk) in becoming a Six Month Smiles Provider and the speed to which that return on investment typically takes place (with the profit from the first 2 pts). The flow of the bullet points will help share how it’s possible – around $4000 for treatment and low lab fees allows for significant profitability. End by sharing how Six Month Smiles is positively affecting your practice this year or the practice of one of your clients (if you are a consultant).
COURSE:
Attending a Two Day Course is the gateway to becoming a Six Month Smiles Provider. The course is full of critical information including two hands-on exercises and a strong emphasis on case selection. After the course, providers are ready to begin treating patients.
