This presentation will give you a brief overview of the upcoming project that will be going on the in the classroom. It will also explain a little about project based learning. If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me at: Email:tmorrison@gmail.com Phone Number: (205)333-3333 Tara Morrison AHHHHH STRESS!!
What is Project-Based Learning?(PBL) Project-Based Learning is centered around the student and not the teacher. Students discipline themselves on what to do and how much time should be spent doing it. The teacher is there to help guide the students instead of standing over them telling what to do. PBL allows the students to "think outside of the box" and dig into the information they feel is important and things they can relate to so the information they are learning can be retained. PBL allows the student to become more independent and self sufficient. How will this be used in the Classroom? Students will create their own experiment determining what stress is, common sources, strategies for coping, and the different approaches to conflict.
OVERVIEW of the UNIT This presentation was created to inform others of the projects we will be starting in class throughout the year. This unit is “AHHHH Stress", which will be completed over a months time. The purpose of this unit is to expose our students what stress is, ways, to deal, and how we process information.
Essential Question?- What is Stress Unit Questions: What are common sources of stress? What are some positive and negative strategies for coping? Content Questions: What is approach-approach conflict? What is approach-avoidance conflict? What is avoidance-avoidance conflict?
Standards and Objectives Social Studies (2004) Grade(s): 9 - 12 Psychology 5.) Identify common sources of stress • Identifying approach-approach, approach-avoidance, and avoidance-avoidance conflicts • Identifying positive and negative strategies for coping with stress Objective 1: Have students correctly identify approach-approach, approach-avoidance, and avoidance-avoidance conflicts. Objective 2:Students will be identifying positive and negative strategies for coping with stress. Social Studies (2004) Grade(s): 9 - 12 Psychology 7.) • Distinguishing between surface and deep processing • Identifying problems related to incomplete retrieval • Comparing processes of short- and long-term memory Objective 1:Students will be able to distinguish between surface and deep processing. . Objective 2: Students will identify strategies used for improving memory.
Benefits of the Unit Provides hands on learning for the students. Allows them to create what they what to study about stress and the brain. Prompts problem-solving skills and forces the student to think about real-life situations. Teaches students the importance of staying on task and taking important notes so their information will have accurate results.
Role of the Teacher, Parent & Student Teacher: The teacher will be there as a facilitator and guide to the students. The teacher will be in the background helping the students when needed. Parent: Need to understand that this project is STUDENT based and should only interact with the student if they ask for advice. But always be an encourager to you child. STUDENT: The student is in control of this project. They will determine and collect data on what causes stress, how we cope with it, and what are different approaches to conflict. Students will also have daily journals that will help them be able to distinguish between surface and deep processing. The journal will also help students identify strategies used for improving memory. Students will then compile the information into a power point and present their findings to the class.
AHHHH STRESS I hope this presentation has helped you to better understand what PBL is and how it will be used in our classroom. Please, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments contact me. I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. I look forward to starting this fun project with your children!
