Q & A
Editor's Notes
Web API – The Bing Maps V8 web control, is built on top of HTML5 and works on PC, MAC, and many mobile browsers. This API is widely used and is a recommended API for most applications.
Mobile APIs – There are several native mobile APIs for Windows Phone. However, using the Bing Maps V8 web control with PhoneGap allows you to target iOS, Android, Blackberry and Kindle Fire using a single code base. This is the approach preferred by customers as it allows them to write one application that works across all devices.
Windows APIs – Bing Maps is built into Windows 10 and provides a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) map control that is supported on all of the devices that Windows 10 is supported on. Such as; PC, mobile, Hololens, Xbox One and many IoT devices. Additionally, Bing Maps also has a WPF map control for creating traditional desktop applications, as well as a Windows 8 map control.
Web Services – Bing Maps provides a number of REST based services that can be used in any application and provides features such as geocoding and routing.
Designed for Enterprise – Bing Maps has always been Enterprise focused. Enterprise level developer support is available to all Bing Maps customers. In addition to this Bing Maps has industry leading SLA’s to ensure customers of maximum performance and uptime.
Global Coverage – Bing Maps has data for cities all around the globe and supports multiple languages. Additionally, it also supports user regions which allows the map to conform to the local views of a user. For example, disputed borders and place names will change based on the region the user is in, so as to align with the views of their region.
Multiple Device Support – What ever the device platform, “We have an API for that”.
Cloud Based – The Bing Maps platform is a cloud based service. In fact it is one of Microsoft’s first cloud based services and was actually used as the basis on which Windows Azure was designed.
In the past, apps that implemented maps required someone who was a “mapping developer”. With the Bing Maps v8 SDK, Microsoft’s modern web mapping platform, this is no longer the case and adding a map to an app is as easy as adding a chart or other standard control. The Bing Maps v8 SDK reduces development time by requiring less code to implement more functionalities. It also brings significance performance improvement. For instance, the Bing Maps SDK uses the HTML5 canvas, which provides a significant rendering performance boost over other map controls. In addition, in response to our developer community’s demand, a number of exciting new features such as Autosuggest, Streetside imagery, and many business intelligence tools have been added.
High Performance - The Bing Maps V8 Web control is HTML5 powered and is one of the fastest web map controls available on the market. It’s over 10 times faster at rendering data than previous versions and capable of rendering tens of thousands of shapes.
Developer Friendly – The V8 SDK has been optimized so as to minimize the amount of code needed to develop apps. It is significantly backwards compatible with V7.
Feature Rich – The Bing Maps V8 control has more than double the number of features of previous versions and has a lot more features being developed. The new features in this web control were selected based on 5 years of customer feedback. As such V8 better aligns with the type of apps customers and developers are trying to build with Bing Maps.
Bing Maps is built into Windows 10 and can be used in Universal Windows Platform apps (UWP). It provides rich 3D maps, streetside imagery and offline capabilities. Not only can road maps be viewed offline, but geocoding and routing are also supported offline.
Additionally, Bing Maps also has a WPF map control that can be used for creating traditional desktop applications.
Windows 10 Maps info:
250+ cities in 11 Countries with 3D
500+ cities with Streetside
In the enterprise version of Windows 10, offline maps can be managed through Mobile Device Manager, giving administrators the ability to ensure that users have maps download offline to reduce data consumption.
3D Countries: US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia.
The 3D city models are some of the highest resolution modules ever used by online maps. Each data point has a resolution of 30cm, meaning that if you measure the location of a corner of a building in real life, the map would display that corner within 30cm of its actual location.
The REST services allow you to perform a number of geographic operations without the need for an interactive map.
Traffic data is available in 55 countries.
Boundary data provides geographic boundary data for countries, states or provinces, counties, cities and zip codes.
Currently Geocoding and Routing support 117 languages.
