Mirimax was originally created to distribute independentfilms deemed commercially unfeasible by the major studios.Founded in 1979 by Bob and Harvey Weinstein and headquartered in NewYork City and Cambridge, Massachusetts, Miramax was a leadingindependent film motion picture distribution and production companybefore it was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1993.The Weinsteins operated Miramax with more creative and financialindependence than any other division of Disney, until 2005 whenthey decided to leave the company and founded The WeinsteinCompany.Miramax was sold by Disney to Filmyard Holdings in 2010, ending Disneysinvolvement with the studio for the first time in 17 years.

The companys first major success came when the Weinsteins teamed upwith British producer Martin Lewis and acquired the U.S. rights to twoconcert films.On December 16, 2010, Miramax reunited with Bob and HarveyWeinstein, forming a joint venture with the brothers current studio, TheWeinstein Company, to develop sequels to films from the former studio.Sequels to Rounders, Bad Santa, and Shakespeare in Love are among thefilms being developed under this new deal, while sequels to BridgetJones’s Diary, Cop Land, From Dusk till Dawn,Swingers, Clerks, Shall WeDance?, and The Amityville Horror are being billed as "potential" projects.Miramax and TWC also said they will partner on new television shows andspecial edition home entertainment releases

On March 25, 2011, Miramax entered licensing talks with various digitalpremium services, including Netflix, Amazon, Google, and Hulu, fordigital distribution of the former companys film library.On August 2011, Miramax formed a partnership with Facebook to create anew app for the latter companys website. Dubbed the "MiramaxeXperience," it allows the public to watch clips from the studios films orrent full movies for 30 "Facebook credits." The films can also be viewedon the iPad or on Google TV.

Why would Miramax distribute my film?Miramax formed to distribute independent and foreign films so they wouldbe more likely to distribute a low budget independent film like mine thansome of the other larger companies (conglomerates).They have links with many other companies including agreements withFacebook; which means they are in touch with people within my owntarget audience as well and would appeal to my target audience.
