CMS Objectives
In this chapter, you will learn:
o Define the goal of a project
o Define the objective of a project
o Identify the needs of the target audience
  o Develop audience profile
Objective Definition
The initial step in the development of a solid
design plan is to define the purpose of your
Web site.

To formulate this definition, you need to
determine the goals and objectives for your
site.
1A. Determine Your Goals
• Goals are the results you want your Web
site to accomplish in a specific time frame

  o GOAL: communicate information, educate,
entertain, or sell a product or service

o TIMEFRAME: reflect a realistic time frame, which
can range from weeks, to months, to years
1B. Determine Your Objectives
The methods to be utilized to accomplish
the goal
1B. Determine Your Objectives
A purpose statement is a written explanation
of a Web site's overall goals and the specific
objectives that will be utilized to achieve the
stated goals
2. Identify the Audience
• How old are they?
• What is their age range?
• What is their gender?
• What are their educational backgrounds?
• What careers, income levels, and
    lifestyles do they have?
2. Define the Needs of Your Audience
• What are they expecting to gain from your
  Web site?
• Do they need quick facts or in-depth
  explanations?
• Do they have any biases?
• Are they experienced Web users?
• Are they international — requiring
  research of cultural differences, norms,
  and customs?
2. Develop the Audience Profile
• Identify what you believe to be your
audience's top two or three needs.
• May decide to designate additional
  resources to meet additional audience
  needs
• Gather feedback
3. Plan the Content
• Consider the different types of content
that you could include in your Web site
  o include text
  o photographs
  o animation
  o video
  o audio
  o dynamically generated content
4. Perform Research
The goal of the research process is to
produce new knowledge
  o Exploratory research,
     • structures and identifies new problems
  o Constructive research,
     • develops solutions to a problem
  o Empirical research,
     • tests the feasibility of a solution using empirical
       evidence
4. Perform Research
The goal of the research process is to
produce new knowledge
  o Exploratory research,
     • structures and identifies new problems
  o Constructive research,
     • develops solutions to a problem
  o Empirical research,
     • tests the feasibility of a solution using empirical
       evidence
4. Perform Research
Distinct Type:
  o Primary research
  o Secondary research

Research is often conducted using the
               hourglass model
Nielsen’s Usability Heuristics
1. Visibility of system status
