It is known that the bands led by Benni Moten and Count Basie influenced the legendary artist. He
played with local bands and played at different jazz clubs around Kansas City, Missouri, and that is
how he mastered his unique technique with the help of Buster Smith. Parker’s developing style was
highly influenced by Smith’s dynamic transitions.
Even after a near-to-death experience in 1936, Parker came back to his field in the year 1937 where
he practiced to develop his sound. In 1938 he joined the band Jay McShann and played in nightclubs
and other places in the southwest, Chicago, and New York City. His professional but was in
collaboration with the band of McShann's. In 1939, he shifted to New York City to pursue his music
career. However, he also did other jobs as well and worked as a dishwasher at Jimmie's Chicken
Shack. This year he got his first musical breakthrough, and while playing the song "Cherokee", he
came across a completely new musical vocabulary that changed music forever.
Tragic Life
Although Parker was a great musician of his time, he faced myriad problems in his life. He has
continuous mental health problems. Also, he struggled with addiction. His life changed forever in
March 1954 when his three-year-old daughter left the world due to pneumonia and cystic fibrosis. He
was once admitted to a mental hospital as well.
