1. Required: Chinese Link Textbook Level 1 Part 1, 2nd Edition (Elementary level, simplified
character, 2nd
edition) by Dr. Sue-mei Wu et al. Prentice Hall, 2011.
ISBN: 9780205823499
Textbook can be purchased in the IVC bookstore. Students can also order the book online.

The LMS (Learning Management System) exclusively used for this course is IVC Canvas. Click
“Canvas” from the ivc.edu home page, log on to Canvas, and click on Chinese I class to view
announcements, download instructor’s worksheets, and do homework assignments.
Access Canvas by clicking on the button at the top of the IVC homepage.

rsanders2) and your password is whatever you set it to. The default password is the last 4 digits of your
Social Security number + 2 zeros (“00”). For any technical assistance, contact the Help Desk at (949)

CHI 180 –Chinese Language Conference 0.5 units B354
Students are encouraged to take the language lab to enhance your Chinese language learning. To earn
the 0.5 units, students are required to complete 24 lab hours by May 21, 2019. The Language Center is
located at B354. The hours are:
M: 8:00AM-8:00PM T: 9:30AM-8:00PM W: 8:00AM-6:30PM
Th: 9:30AM-6:30PM F: 8:00AM-2:00PM
Chinese Conference Session hours: Tue 2:00PM - 3:20PM

4. Recommended Apps:
a. Canvas Student: Students can download “Canvas Student” App to their smart phone or iPad.
Log in to Canvas with you IVC user ID and password to access the course material from your
phone or iPad.
b. VoiceThread: Students can download “VoiceThread” app to your smart phone or iPad. This is
the application instructor used for all course video/audio lessons.
5. Add Chinese characters to your computer or other devices
1) Window users: Go to Control Panel, Select Language option, Add Chinese (PRC), select IME –
Microsoft Pinyin. To learn more, visit www.Chinese-tools.com/resources/windows-xp.html
2) Use Online Chinese Input Method Editor
http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/ime.html
3) Mac users can also install Chinese characters by selecting simplified Chinese and Pinyin IME.
4) iPhone / iPad users: Go to settings=> general=> international =>keyboards. Add Chinese,
Simplified, pinyin input and handwriting.
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
This is an online Chinese language course for beginners. The learning methods of this Chinese Course
are using:
1. Online self-learning activities
2. Online quizzes and homework
3. Handwrite worksheets
Students log in to Canvas, and study the course material with the online learning activities on their own
pace. This Chinese online course is designed to integrate self-study skills and online activities in order
to help beginners develop their communicative competence in the four basic skills of listening,
speaking, reading and writing, while gaining competence in Chinese culture, exercising their ability to
compare aspects of different cultures, making connections to their daily life, and building links among
communities.
Announcements
Announcements will be posted and sent to students on a regular basis. Please check your email
regularly, as they will contain important information about upcoming projects or class concerns.

LEARNING PROCEDURE
The online instructional materials are designed for students to study at their own pace. The online
activities include audio / video lessons, learning games, worksheets, listening activities, recording
assignments, writing assignments, online homework, quizzes, and voice recording.
Online Learning Activities Routine
1. Print a copy of Worksheet and worksheet answer of each lesson.
2. Go to Instructor's video folder, and study along with the instructional audio/video lessons
including vocabulary, sentence patterns, dialogue.
3. Memorize the vocabulary, patterns and dialogue
4. Watch the worksheet instruction audio/video and complete the worksheet. Check the answer
after you have completed. Scan the worksheet and save to a pdf file/ or take photos.
5. Practice Chinese characters
6. Complete listening assignments
7. Practice online learning games
8. Complete online homework, quiz, and recording assignment
9. Complete online exam
10. Submit worksheet pdf or photo files to Canvas.
Or Drop off the worksheet at my office – LA 220.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
After the completion of this course, the students can expect to be able to understand and communicate
on the following topics
Introduction: You and the other students in the Classroom Settings: Classroom commands,
Names, Numbers to 100 and greater, Greetings, Description of people.
1. Lesson 1: Exchange simple greetings, asking yes/no questions
2. Lesson 2: Exchange names, get to know each other
3. Lesson 3: Nationality, asking each other’s nationalities and language
4. Lesson 4: Ask and explain what something is; talk about courses in school
5. Lesson 5: Introduce people, make small talk
6. Lesson 6: Introduce oneself and one’s family
7. Lesson 7: Exchange addresses and phone numbers, make phone calls
8. Lesson 8: Plans and preferences
9. Lesson 9: Phone Calls
10. Lesson 10: Time and Schedules
11. Lesson 11: Restaurant

Students will:
1. Master the use of the Pinyin system as a tool.
2. Learn 300+ Chinese characters and phrases.
3. Develop basic literacy in Chinese characters.
4. Learn to apply vocabulary and patterns learned in a linguistically, socially and culturally
appropriate manner.
5. Participate in short conversations in Chinese on everyday life topics.
6. Write notes, dialogues, and skits in Chinese.
Student Learning Outcome
SLO #1: Course-appropriate ability to interpret Chinese
Students will demonstrate course-pertinent vocabulary and course-appropriate ability to interpret
Chinese with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.
SLO #2: Interpret spoken Chinese language
Student will interpret spoken Chinese language based on topics listed in the Course Outline of Record
with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.
SLO #3: Identify course-pertinent vocabulary
Students will correctly identify course-pertinent vocabulary based on topics of listed in the Course
Outline of Record with 70% accuracy of proficiency.
SLO #4: Read and interpret 300 Chinese characters
Students will read and interpret material written in Chinese of at least 300 Chinese characters in length
with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better.
Student Learning Outcome Assessment Method
1. Exam/Quiz – on Canvas
20 Vocabulary questions embedded in the final exam.
2. Writing Assignment
Students write a paragraph of 100 Chinese characters of a given topic.
3. Presentation
Students are able to do a one minute oral presentation in Chinese of assigned topic related to the
course content.
Important Dates:
Drop with Refund by: 1-27-2019
Elect Pass/No Pass by: 2-20-2019
Drop without a W by: 2 - 3- 2019
Drop with a W by: 4-10-2019
Last week of class ends: 5-22-2019

Dropping policy:
A. Instructors are expected to drop any student who fails to attend the class for no reason;
and students may be dropped for non-attendance.
B. Students are responsible for dropping the class they are no longer attending; failure to do
so will result in a grade of “F”.
C. Due to enrollment demands, students who do not complete Lesson 1 assignment by the
due date may be dropped from this class.
D. Students who do not attend the final exam will receive “F” grade in this class.
Students who are still officially enrolled past the withdrawal deadline (65% point/Drop
with a “W” Grade) and who have been excessively absent per the attendance policy
may be assigned a FW grade. The FW counts the same as a F grade in the grade point
average, but denotes you stopped attending class and did not fail due to lack of
mastery of the course material. The FW grade may impact eligibility for some types of
financial aid. See the Financial Aid Office for more information
Grading Standards
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
Grades are NOT rounded up on the final grade in this course.
a. Worksheets and Online Assignments (40 %)
Students need to download / print the homework worksheets from Canvas. It is the student’s
responsibility to submit handwrite homework and complete online homework on time. Any late work is
regarded as missing work. Any work turned in late will receive no credit. Students should retain all
assignments until you receive your final grade in the course.
There are three types of assignments:
1) Online homework and online recording assignments for each lesson
2) Handwrite worksheet including character, grammar and listening exercise for each lesson
3) Culture Unit discussion, quizzes and assignments
b. Tests - Quizzes (25%) and Chapter Exam (20%)
For each lesson, there will be two quizzes. For every 2 lessons, there will be an exam. Exams may
include Pinyin, Chinese Characters, listening comprehension, reading, and writing short paragraphs.
Students are not allowed to make-up missed exams.
c. Final Exam (15%)
The final exam includes an oral presentation, short essay and exam. All materials taught in this course
will be tested in the final exam.

Grading scale:
Letter Grade Pass / No pass
100% - 90% - A
89.99% - 80% - B
79.99% - 70% - C
69.99% - 60% - D
59.99% and below – F
100% - 70% Pass
69.99% and below No pass
NATIVE SPEAKERS
This beginning Chinese class is far below the level of any native speaker of Chinese. If you do not wish
to learn another language and choose to be in this class in order to meet a college requirement, keep in
mind that your instructor will only give you credit for what you accomplish in this course, and not
for what you already know. Check with your counselor to know more about language requirements
for the four-year institution.
Academic HONESTY
Cheating and other forms of dishonest behavior are destructive to the educational process for all
students, and will not be tolerated in this class. As a result, the following guidelines shall be followed:
1. Students may not submit work that is not totally their own, and
2. Exams must be taken individually with no assistance of any kind.
Anyone caught copying from others, allowing others to copy his/her work or using information
fraudulently obtained is subject to receiving an “F” in the class.
Any student engaged in ANY dishonest behaviors may receive an “F” on the activity, an “F” in the
course, and may be reported to the Dean of Student Services. If you would like more information on
the academic honesty policies of Irvine Valley College, please refer to page 77 in the 2010-2011
Course Catalogue or page 74 in the fall 2010 Schedule of Classes.
Code of Conduct: Irvine Valley College policy states that electronic communications conducted in the
course web site are “public” communications in the same way that classroom exchanges are public.
POLICIES
Drop Policy… It’s YOUR responsibility!
Instructor may drop you for excessive absences, but ultimately it is YOUR responsibility to drop the
class. Do not assume that the instructor will drop you. It is your responsibility.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS
If you have a disability that might prevent you from fully demonstrating your academic abilities, you
should meet with the Disabled Student Program staff in SSC 171, or call (949) 451-5778 to talk to an
IVC Learning Disabilities Specialist, as soon as possible to initiate disability verification and discuss

appropriate accommodations. It is also student’s responsibility to make the instructor aware of any
special needs you may have relating to this class.

TEXTS & MATERIALS 1. Required: Chinese Link Textbook Level 1 Part 1, 2nd Edition (Elementary level, simplified character, 2nd edition) by Dr. Sue-mei Wu et al. Prentice Hall, 2011. ISBN: 9780205823499 Textbook can be purchased in the IVC bookstore. Students can also order the book online. 2. Required: https://ivc.instructure.com/login/canvas The LMS (Learning Management System) exclusively used for this course is IVC Canvas. Click “Canvas” from the ivc.edu home page, log on to Canvas, and click on Chinese I class to view announcements, download instructor’s worksheets, and do homework assignments. Access Canvas by clicking on the button at the top of the IVC homepage. (https://ivc.instructure.com/login/canvas ) Your username is the first part of your college email (e.g., rsanders2) and your password is whatever you set it to. The default password is the last 4 digits of your Social Security number + 2 zeros (“00”). For any technical assistance, contact the Help Desk at (949) 451-5696 or email: ivctech@ivc.edu 3. Recommend: CHI 180 –Chinese Language Conference 0.5 units B354 Students are encouraged to take the language lab to enhance your Chinese language learning. To earn the 0.5 units, students are required to complete 24 lab hours by May 21, 2019. The Language Center is located at B354. Log in to Canvas with you IVC user ID and password to access the course material from your phone or iPad. b. VoiceThread: Students can download “VoiceThread” app to your smart phone or iPad. This is the application instructor used for all course video/audio lessons. 5. Add Chinese characters to your computer or other devices 1) Window users: Go to Control Panel, Select Language option, Add Chinese (PRC), select IME – Microsoft Pinyin. To learn more, visit www.Chinese-tools.com/resources/windows-xp.html 2) Use Online Chinese Input Method Editor http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/ime.html 3) Mac users can also install Chinese characters by selecting simplified Chinese and Pinyin IME. 4) iPhone / iPad users: Go to settings=> general=> international =>keyboards. Add Chinese, Simplified, pinyin input and handwriting. INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS This is an online Chinese language course for beginners. The learning methods of this Chinese Course are using: 1. Online self-learning activities 2. Online quizzes and homework 3. Handwrite worksheets Students log in to Canvas, and study the course material with the online learning activities on their own pace. This Chinese online course is designed to integrate self-study skills and online activities in order to help beginners develop their communicative competence in the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, while gaining competence in Chinese culture, exercising their ability to compare aspects of different cultures, making connections to their daily life, and building links among communities. Announcements Announcements will be posted and sent to students on a regular basis. Please check your email regularly, as they will contain important information about upcoming projects or class concerns.
  • 3. 3 LEARNING PROCEDURE The online instructional materials are designed for students to study at their own pace. The online activities include audio / video lessons, learning games, worksheets, listening activities, recording assignments, writing assignments, online homework, quizzes, and voice recording. Online Learning Activities Routine 1. Print a copy of Worksheet and worksheet answer of each lesson. 2. Go to Instructor's video folder, and study along with the instructional audio/video lessons including vocabulary, sentence patterns, dialogue. 3. Memorize the vocabulary, patterns and dialogue 4. Watch the worksheet instruction audio/video and complete the worksheet. Check the answer after you have completed. Scan the worksheet and save to a pdf file/ or take photos. 5. Practice Chinese characters 6. Complete listening assignments 7. Practice online learning games 8. Complete online homework, quiz, and recording assignment 9. Complete online exam 10. Submit worksheet pdf or photo files to Canvas. Or Drop off the worksheet at my office – LA 220. COURSE OBJECTIVES After the completion of this course, the students can expect to be able to understand and communicate on the following topics Introduction: You and the other students in the Classroom Settings: Classroom commands, Names, Numbers to 100 and greater, Greetings, Description of people. 1. Lesson 1: Exchange simple greetings, asking yes/no questions 2. Lesson 2: Exchange names, get to know each other 3. Lesson 3: Nationality, asking each other’s nationalities and language 4. Lesson 4: Ask and explain what something is; talk about courses in school 5. Lesson 5: Introduce people, make small talk 6. Lesson 6: Introduce oneself and one’s family 7. Lesson 7: Exchange addresses and phone numbers, make phone calls 8. Lesson 8: Plans and preferences 9. Lesson 9: Phone Calls 10. Lesson 10: Time and Schedules 11. Lesson 11: Restaurant
  • 4. 4 Students will: 1. Master the use of the Pinyin system as a tool. 2. Learn 300+ Chinese characters and phrases. 3. Develop basic literacy in Chinese characters. 4. Learn to apply vocabulary and patterns learned in a linguistically, socially and culturally appropriate manner. 5. Participate in short conversations in Chinese on everyday life topics. 6. Write notes, dialogues, and skits in Chinese. Student Learning Outcome SLO #1: Course-appropriate ability to interpret Chinese Students will demonstrate course-pertinent vocabulary and course-appropriate ability to interpret Chinese with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better. SLO #2: Interpret spoken Chinese language Student will interpret spoken Chinese language based on topics listed in the Course Outline of Record with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better. SLO #3: Identify course-pertinent vocabulary Students will correctly identify course-pertinent vocabulary based on topics of listed in the Course Outline of Record with 70% accuracy of proficiency. SLO #4: Read and interpret 300 Chinese characters Students will read and interpret material written in Chinese of at least 300 Chinese characters in length with 70% accuracy of proficiency or better. Student Learning Outcome Assessment Method 1. Exam/Quiz – on Canvas 20 Vocabulary questions embedded in the final exam. 2. Writing Assignment Students write a paragraph of 100 Chinese characters of a given topic. 3. Presentation Students are able to do a one minute oral presentation in Chinese of assigned topic related to the course content. Important Dates: Drop with Refund by: 1-27-2019 Elect Pass/No Pass by: 2-20-2019 Drop without a W by: 2 - 3- 2019 Drop with a W by: 4-10-2019 Last week of class ends: 5-22-2019
  • 5. 5 Dropping policy: A. Instructors are expected to drop any student who fails to attend the class for no reason; and students may be dropped for non-attendance. B. Students are responsible for dropping the class they are no longer attending; failure to do so will result in a grade of “F”. C. Due to enrollment demands, students who do not complete Lesson 1 assignment by the due date may be dropped from this class. D. Students who do not attend the final exam will receive “F” grade in this class. Students who are still officially enrolled past the withdrawal deadline (65% point/Drop with a “W” Grade) and who have been excessively absent per the attendance policy may be assigned a FW grade. The FW counts the same as a F grade in the grade point average, but denotes you stopped attending class and did not fail due to lack of mastery of the course material. The FW grade may impact eligibility for some types of financial aid. See the Financial Aid Office for more information Grading Standards Your grade will be based on the following criteria: Grades are NOT rounded up on the final grade in this course. a. Worksheets and Online Assignments (40 %) Students need to download / print the homework worksheets from Canvas. It is the student’s responsibility to submit handwrite homework and complete online homework on time. Any late work is regarded as missing work. Any work turned in late will receive no credit. Students should retain all assignments until you receive your final grade in the course. There are three types of assignments: 1) Online homework and online recording assignments for each lesson 2) Handwrite worksheet including character, grammar and listening exercise for each lesson 3) Culture Unit discussion, quizzes and assignments b. Tests - Quizzes (25%) and Chapter Exam (20%) For each lesson, there will be two quizzes. For every 2 lessons, there will be an exam. Exams may include Pinyin, Chinese Characters, listening comprehension, reading, and writing short paragraphs. Students are not allowed to make-up missed exams. c. Final Exam (15%) The final exam includes an oral presentation, short essay and exam. All materials taught in this course will be tested in the final exam.
  • 6. 6 Grading scale: Letter Grade Pass / No pass 100% - 90% - A 89.99% - 80% - B 79.99% - 70% - C 69.99% - 60% - D 59.99% and below – F 100% - 70% Pass 69.99% and below No pass NATIVE SPEAKERS This beginning Chinese class is far below the level of any native speaker of Chinese. If you do not wish to learn another language and choose to be in this class in order to meet a college requirement, keep in mind that your instructor will only give you credit for what you accomplish in this course, and not for what you already know. Check with your counselor to know more about language requirements for the four-year institution. Academic HONESTY Cheating and other forms of dishonest behavior are destructive to the educational process for all students, and will not be tolerated in this class. As a result, the following guidelines shall be followed: 1. Students may not submit work that is not totally their own, and 2. Exams must be taken individually with no assistance of any kind. Anyone caught copying from others, allowing others to copy his/her work or using information fraudulently obtained is subject to receiving an “F” in the class. Any student engaged in ANY dishonest behaviors may receive an “F” on the activity, an “F” in the course, and may be reported to the Dean of Student Services.
