Bust that myth! The catalogue is better than LibrarySearch for known item searching
Bust that myth! Participant was asked to find a copy of: Horngren, C. et al (2010). Accounting (6th Australian ed.). Frenches Forest, NSW: Pearson Australia.
Bust that myth! Results of usability studies on students and staff - July 2010
LibrarySearch – known item (book)
LibrarySearch – known item (journal)
Techniques for known item searching Tips for known item searching Forget field searching, treat like Googlee.g. accounting horngren6the.g. 10.1111/j.1542-2011.2010.00013.x. Use author surnames only e.g. horngren NOT horngren, c Use content types Be aware of content type pitfallse.g. journals or ejournalse.g. books or ebooksIf unsure, use:Restrict to items in the library catalog Be aware of Advanced search pitfallse.g. Can only select 1 content typee.g. Doesn’t have ejournal format limit
It’s a knock-out: LibrarySearch vs. Databases
LibrarySearch ,[object Object]
Access to the majority of Griffith’s database content
Access to Griffith’s catalogue content,[object Object]
Limit: relevant subjects ,[object Object]
From “Abstract and Indexed” journals
Adds an additional level of relevance to results
Can help you to narrow your results effectively
Can help you to find synonyms,[object Object]
Reading the results Add to folder Citation count
Accessing the article Alternative access Alert options Download PDF
Search query handling What’s the same? Phrase search (“”) Truncation (*) Wildcard (?) Boolean operators (AND OR NOT)Note: Operators must be in capitals in LibrarySearch By default all terms are combined with AND Catalogue No stopwordse.g. the, of, an are searched No automatic stemming Field searching via dropdown menu or search forms LibrarySearch Intelligent stopword handlinge.g. The Australian returns different results to Australian Exception based stemminge.g. “aid” does not = “aids” Field searching via Advanced Search form or field:(query) e.g. ISSN:(1234-5678) Blank searches – YAY!!
Lights out: LibrarySearch vs. Google Scholar
Bust that myth! LibrarySearch doesn’t cover Elsevier journals (ScienceDirect)
LibrarySearch coverage Subscribe to the Summon Insider http://support.serialssolutions.com/ci/documents/detail/2/set-email
LibrarySearch coverage today What is included? Library catalogue records Griffith Research Online (GRO) Article level indexing for the critical mass of our journal subscriptions (about 80%) Multimedia, for example: Music from Naxos Video from Alexander Street Press Images from Luna Commons What’s not included? Griffith Image collections Specialised content types, for example: Case law Statistics Company information Standards
Add results beyond your library’s collection Modifies the search to include the entire Summon index with the exception of: other institutions' catalogue records private, unsubscribed A&I content Includes collections such as: Open access content Digital repositories from other institutions

  • 45. LibrarySearch architecture Which databases are in LibrarySearch? It is difficult to make comparisons at the database level because Serials Solutions negotiates agreements at the publisher level. Where a publisher owns a database, it is somewhat safe to assume coverage e.g. Elsevier  ScienceDirect SAGE  SAGE Online But it is best to work at the journal title level to ascertain coverage.
  • 46. LibrarySearch architecture Not federated search Architected like Google Pre-harvested/indexed content in a single unified index Work directly with content providers to receive the best metadata Merge metadata elements to create even better records
  • 47. Full Text Online The record is associated with a Full Text database subscribed to by Griffith Citation Online The record is associated with an A&I database tracked by Griffith AVAILABLE The record originates in the library catalogue
  • 49. Questions and feedback Got a move you’d like to know how to execute? Is there anything that drives you insane about LibrarySearch? Let us know, maybe we can fix it!

Editor's Notes

  1. They don’t know how to use the catalogue intuitively. We teach them.
  2. Partial success known article = couldn’t find PDF link on EBSCOhostPartial success known book- = found the International edition instead of the Australian edition (same publication year)Better success rate in LibrarySearch than catalogue
  3. There is no definitive list of stopwords in LibrarySearchStrips out punctuation??
  4. Demonstrate by restricting to journal articles and searching for “tax haven countries”Click on “Which countries become tax havens?”
  5. Point out “About” link from LibrarySearch results screenGriffith is working to add the HubThe vendor is continually adding new content – stay up to date by subscribing to the Summon Insider – needs a valid Griffith email address
  6. To find out which journals are covered – see list on “About LibrarySearch” pageLibrarySearch content updated daily – dependent on frequency of publicationCatalogue updated weekly
  7. At Griffith, Summon has been branded LibrarySearch.
  8. If the link doesn’t work it means there is a discrepancy between the metadata from the citation source and the full text provider.
  9. Weighting is given where the search terms match the primary titleExamples:Good to greatParalegal success : going from good to great in the new centuryAn item titled Coaching, mentoring, and managing that has the phrase "good to great" in the summaryAgeless : what every woman needs to know to look good and feel great100% pure Florida fiction : an anthology that has "great" in the contents and "good" and "to" in the summary.
  10. Bolded red content types are used in both the catalogue and LibrarySearchLibrary databases are mapped to Electronic resources in LibrarySearchTalk about ebooksvs books and ejournalsvs journals
  11. Placing a hold – they’re working on making this possible from LibrarySearch
  12. Demonstrate building RSS feeds in LibrarySearchFor japanese language video recordings – mention the power of a blank search if haven’t alreadyFor TOC alerts within a journal – best to use publisher database
