2. This History of Judy
 Was born June 10, 1922 by the name Frances Ethel
Gumm.
 At the age of 2 started Frances path to be a star.
 Frances’s mother pushed her daughter to become a
star.
 At the age of 13 Frances signed on with MGM.
 With sign on at MGM her name then changed to Judy
Garland, but to fit with MGM Judy had to change her
appearance by using caps over her teeth and wearing
rubber disk in her nose to reshape it.

3. Her Time With MGM
 MGM and Judy Garland had a love-hate relationship.
The studio put Judy on a very strict diet, plus a mix of
benzedrine and phenobarbital (aka amphetamines).
But not only was the amphetamines used for dieting it
was also to give a lot of the actors energy to keep
making a lot of films in a short period of time.
Barbiturates where given to a lot of the
actors/actresses so they could sleep at night. This
began Judy’s addiction to the amphetamines and
barbiturates.

 Judy Garland appeared in
over 40 films during her
lifetime and appeared in
1,100 concerts.

5. Marriages and The End of Judy
 Judy Garland was married 5 times and had 3 children.
 On June 22, 1969 Judy Garland was found dead in her
bathroom at her Chelsea, London house. her blood
contained the equivalent of ten 1.5-grain (97 mg)
Seconal capsules. Also a lot of doctors around Garland
said that she was living on borrowed time due to
Cirrhosis of the liver.

7. First Session with Judy
 With sitting down with Judy in the Summer of 1952 for
our first session was very interesting. She was very
open with her drug addictions and other problems.
She was somewhat loud and very talkative. The first
session was mostly introduction to counseling and
doing a mental status exam. With the first session I
was able to diagnose Judy on each axis of the DSM.

8. DSM-IV-TR Diagnosis
 Axis I: 304.40 Amphetamine Dependence and 292.89
Sedative Dependence
 Axis II: V71.09 No Diagnosis
 Axis III: No medical conditions reported by Client
 Axis IV: Occupational Problems, Housing problems,
relationship problems
 Axis V: GAF: 51 (Current)

9. Treatment Plan
 Treatment Goals:
 1. Encourage Abstinence
 2. Break through Denial
 3. Support Cognitive Restructing
 4. Improve behavioral self-control
 5. Improve coping skills
 6. Improve solving-problem skills
 7. Improve self-esteem
 Judy Short-term/long term goals:
 1. Become Abstinence and staying clean
 2. Become financially stable
 3. Being more self-confident and higher self-esteem

10. Successful or Not?
 As you may have guest Judy Garland wasn’t successful
with treatment. We had 24 sessions and there seemed
to be no improvement. We both mutually agreed that
treatment wasn’t helping and she decided to go
somewhere else for counseling.
