Adverbial Clause
(Mệnh Đề Trạng Ngữ)
1. Định nghĩa: Mệnh đề trạng ngữ là mệnh đề có chức năng ngữ
pháp của một trạng ngữ (bổ nghĩa cho một mệnh đề khác). Các
mệnh đề trạng ngữ thường được gọi là mệnh đề phụ (là những
mệnh đề không diễn tả được một ý trọn vẹn và không thể đứng độc
lập)
• Ví dụ:
• When I finish studying, I will go abroad. (Khi tôi học xong, tôi sẽ ra
nước ngoài.)
• Nếu chỉ để mệnh đề trạng ngữ ‘When I finish studying’, thì câu sẽ
không rõ nghĩa.
2. Adverbial clauses of condition, comparison, manner, and result
Mệnh đề trạng từ chỉ điều kiện, sự so sánh, cách thức, và kết quả)
I. MĐ Điều kiện (Adverb Clause of Condition)
Câu điều kiện loại 1: If (hiện tại đơn), will/can/may + Vo
Câu điều kiện loại 2: If (quá khứ đơn/were), would/could + Vo
• Don’t stay up late. You may fall ill (if)
→If you stay up late, you may fall ill
• You should buy that car. Its price is reasonable. (if)
→ If I were you, I would buy that car.
• I don’t have a lot of money. I can’t travel around the world. (if)
→If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.
Adverb Clause of Condition(MĐ Điều kiện)
with “if”, ‘unless’ =if not , or ‘provided that’ (với Điều kiện)
• I only watch TV if my favorite show is on.
• He won’t go to university unless he studies very hard.
• You can play the game, provided that you follow the rules.
II. Mệnh đề chỉ cách thức (Adverb Clause of Manner)
‘like’, ‘as though’ or ‘as if’:
• As/ Just as/like ( như là/ giống như là)
Ví dụ: We completed the exercises as the teacher had required.
It sounds like a baby crying.
Sue doesn’t look like her mother, doesn’t she?
• As if/As though: như thể là
+ Điều kiện có thật: As if/As though + S + V (hiện tại)
It looks as if/as though it is going to rain. (Trông như thể là trời sắp mưa.)
+ Điều kiện không có thật ở hiện tại: As if/As though + S + Were/V (quá khứ)
He dresses as if/as though it were in winter even in the summer.
(Anh ta mặc cứ như là mùa đông dù đang là mùa hè.)
+ Điều kiện không có thật ở quá khứ: As if/As though + S + had + PII
• Ryan walked past as if he hadn’t seen us.
(Anh ta chạy qua cứ như thể là đã không thấy chúng tôi.)
III. Mệnh đề so sánh (Adverbial Clause of Comparison)
‘less’, ‘than’ or ‘as…as’:
• So sánh ngang bằng:
• S1+ be (not) + as + adj + as + S2
She is as beautiful as her mother.
He is not as tall as his brother.
S1+ V(not) + as + ADV+ as + S2
He speaks English as fluently as his teacher
She doesn’t study as well as her sister.
III. Mệnh đề so sánh (Adverbial Clause of Comparison)
“less’, ‘than’ or ‘as…as’:
• So sánh hơn kém:
+ Tính từ/trạng từ ngắn: Adj/Adv + er + than
Ex: Today is colder than yesterday. (Hôm nay lạnh hơn hôm qua.)
+Tính từ/trạng từ dài: more/less + Adj/Adv + than
Ex: This watch is more expensive than that one.
(Chiếc đồng hồ này đắt hơn chiếc đồng hồ kia)
• So sánh hơn nhất: the most/least + Adj/Adv
Ex: My father drives the most carefully in my family.
(Bố tôi lái xe cẩn thận nhất trong gia đình tôi)
IV. Mệnh đề chỉ kết quả (Adverbial clause of result)
so… that, such……that (quá … đến nỗi………)
* So + Adj/Adv + that (1)
So + many/much/ (a) few/ (a) little + N + that (2)
• Ví dụ:
- He is so intelligent that he can do all the difficult exercises. (Anh
ấy giỏi tới mức mà anh ấy có thể làm được tất cả những bài tập khó.)
- He ran so fast that I couldn't catch up.
- There are so many students that there are not enough chairs.
(Có nhiều học sinh tới mức mà không có đủ ghế để ngồi.)
so… that, such……that (quá … đến nỗi………)
2. Such ...that
…. such + (a/an) + adj + noun + that ……..
It was such a cold day that I just want to stay at home.
(Trời lạnh đến nỗi mà tôi chỉ muốn ở nhà.)
These are such interesting books that I want to buy all of them
so/therefore/as a result :Vì vậy, vì thế
3. So: I do not have enough money, so I cannot buy a new television.
Therefore/Consequently/As a result/As a consequence/with the
result that
• I got up late, with the result that I missed my bus.
(Tôi dậy muộn vì vậy tôi bị lỡ xe buýt.)
+ Lưu ý: Với các trạng từ chỉ kết quả ‘Therefore/Consequently/As a
result/ As a consequence’, ta dùng giữa dấu chấm phẩy (;) và dấu
phẩy (,) hoặc đứng đầu câu rồi dùng dấy phẩy (,).
• She is not a good student; therefore, she cannot get good marks.
(Cô ấy không phải học sinh giỏi vì vậy có ấy không có nhiều điểm tốt.)
Act 3. Underline the adverbial clause in each sentence below.
Then say what type of adverbial clause it is.
• 1. If I knew French, .. (adverbial clause of condition)
• 2. … than her mother. (adverbial clause of comparison)
• 3. … like he is my father. (adverbial clause of manner)
• 4. …that Nam dropped out of school. (adverbial clause of result)
• 5. …unless he works harder. (adverbial clause of condition)
• Students don’t work as hard as workers.
Act 4. Combine the sentences.
• 1. If you are late for work, you may lose your job.
• 2. Secondary school students work as hard as factory workers.
• 3. Linda was offered such a good job that she didn’t hesitate to accept
it.
• 4. If you do not tell me everything, I will not be able to help you.
• 5. We mixed the chemicals exactly as the lab instructor had told us to.

Các mệnh đề trạng ngữ thường được gọi là mệnh đề phụ (là những mệnh đề không diễn tả được một ý trọn vẹn và không thể đứng độc lập) • Ví dụ: • When I finish studying, I will go abroad. (Khi tôi học xong, tôi sẽ ra nước ngoài.) • Nếu chỉ để mệnh đề trạng ngữ ‘When I finish studying’, thì câu sẽ không rõ nghĩa.

You may fall ill (if) →If you stay up late, you may fall ill • You should buy that car. Its price is reasonable. (if) → If I were you, I would buy that car. • I don’t have a lot of money. I can’t travel around the world. (if) →If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.
  • 15. Adverb Clause of Condition(MĐ Điều kiện) with “if”, ‘unless’ =if not , or ‘provided that’ (với Điều kiện) • I only watch TV if my favorite show is on. • He won’t go to university unless he studies very hard. • You can play the game, provided that you follow the rules.
  • 16. II. Mệnh đề chỉ cách thức (Adverb Clause of Manner) ‘like’, ‘as though’ or ‘as if’: • As/ Just as/like ( như là/ giống như là) Ví dụ: We completed the exercises as the teacher had required. It sounds like a baby crying. Sue doesn’t look like her mother, doesn’t she? • As if/As though: như thể là + Điều kiện có thật: As if/As though + S + V (hiện tại) It looks as if/as though it is going to rain. (Trông như thể là trời sắp mưa.) + Điều kiện không có thật ở hiện tại: As if/As though + S + Were/V (quá khứ) He dresses as if/as though it were in winter even in the summer. (Anh ta mặc cứ như là mùa đông dù đang là mùa hè.) + Điều kiện không có thật ở quá khứ: As if/As though + S + had + PII • Ryan walked past as if he hadn’t seen us. Mệnh đề chỉ kết quả (Adverbial clause of result) so… that, such……that (quá … đến nỗi………) * So + Adj/Adv + that (1) So + many/much/ (a) few/ (a) little + N + that (2) • Ví dụ: - He is so intelligent that he can do all the difficult exercises. (Anh ấy giỏi tới mức mà anh ấy có thể làm được tất cả những bài tập khó.) - He ran so fast that I couldn't catch up. - There are so many students that there are not enough chairs. (Có nhiều học sinh tới mức mà không có đủ ghế để ngồi.)
  • 20. so… that, such……that (quá … đến nỗi………) 2. Such ...that …. such + (a/an) + adj + noun + that …….. It was such a cold day that I just want to stay at home. (Trời lạnh đến nỗi mà tôi chỉ muốn ở nhà.) These are such interesting books that I want to buy all of them
