12. Definitions of Leadership
“Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right
things” Peter Drucker
“Leadership is persuasion NOT domination” Daniel Goleman
"Leadership is a winning combination of personal traits and the ability to think and act
as a leader, a person who directs the activities of others for the good of all. Anyone can
be a leader, even if the only person they’re leading is themselves.“ Susan Ward
"Leadership is the wise use of power. Power is the capacity to translate intention into
reality and sustain it.“ Warren Bennis
"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because
he wants to do it.“ Dwight D. Eisenhower
"A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the
power and energy to get it done.“ Ralph Lauren
"The best leaders are those most interested in surrounding themselves with assistants
and associates smarter than they are. They are frank in admitting this and are willing to
pay for such talents.“ Amos Parrish
13. Survival exercise
Divide yourselves into two teams.
You and your companions have just survived the crash of a small plane.
Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is mid-January and
you are in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is zero and the
night time temperature is below zero. There is snow on the ground and
the countryside contains several creeks criss-crossing the area. The
nearest town is 35 kilometres away. You are all dressed in city clothes
appropriate for a business meeting.
14. Survival exercise cont’d … /
Your task as a group is to list the 12 items in order of importance for
your survival. List the uses for each. You will be required to come to
agreement as a group and describe why you prioritised each item as
you did.
You have 15 minutes to complete your priority lists and rationales. Be
ready to present back to the rest of the group.
15. Discussion questions for team debate
• How were decisions made?
• Who influenced the decisions and how?
• How could better decisions have been made?
• Did people listen to each other? if not why not?
• What roles did group members adopt?
• How was conflict managed?
• What kinds of behaviour helped or hindered the group?
• How did people feel about the decisions?
• What have you learned about the functioning of this group?
• How would you do the activity differently if you were asked to do it again?
