  1. 1. + Internship PowerPoint Spring 2016 225 hours completed Sarah Riley Saint
  2. 2. + Internship site: Greenville Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship
  3. 3. + My position and site description:  I interned at the Greenville Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship (CIOS) as a research assistant  CIOS is the first of its kind in the nation  It is part of the Cancer Institute and helps offer services and resources to treat the whole person from diagnosis to survivorship  It is made up of nurses, physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers and other health professionals to provide a holistic approach for cancer patients and survivors  At an Integrative Oncology and Survivorship appointment, patients meet with oncology nurse practitioners who evaluate, screen, and refer patients to services provided at CIOS (see next slide)
  4. 4. +
  5. 5. + CIOS Services Offered  Nutritional counseling  Individual social work counseling  Smoking cessation  Referrals to integrative therapies  Massage therapy  Oncology rehabilitation  Lymphedema management  Free support groups and classes within the Cancer Support Community
  6. 6. + Mission Statement: “Greenville Health System’s Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship (CIOS) is a new patient-centered program that integrates evidence- based complementary therapies with traditional cancer care to treat the ‘whole patient,’ encompassing mind, body and spirit.”
  7. 7. + My department: Research and Clinical Trials  GHS Cancer Institute has been awarded $6.7 million to conduct clinical trials and research studies in a hope to increase patient outcomes and reduce health disparities  The research department coordinates and runs clinical trials and other studies in cancer patients in order to improve quality of life and find better and more effective treatments  My site supervisors were Katie Daniels (research associate) and Gina Franco (manager)
  8. 8. + Internship Projects (see website for full description)  Helped coordinate mindfulness research study as well as helped turn the study curriculum into a class for all of the CIOS community (see more in future slides)  Entered lung cancer screening forms into REDCAPS database  Researched long term alopecia and current studies for a new research study proposal  Presented research to Cancer Institute staff  Helped run Kids Club, child support group for those with relatives with cancer  Created quarterly reports showing which doctors referred the most patients to the smoking cessation program  Wrote a consent for for IRB approval on a pilot study for an intervention for breast cancer weight gain
  9. 9. + Mindfulness Class Binder  The social worker who lead the mindfulness class for the research study decided to offer a class on mindfulness open to the entire cancer support community  She wanted to create her own curriculum though, and so I helped her research different topics on mindfulness and create a binder to support the class
  10. 10. + A typical day.. Aside from my bigger internship projects, I worked everyday on smaller and more urgent tasks Here I was working to put together 200 packets with 9 healthy recipes. They were being used as gifts for a health fair. On a typical day, I helped put together many informational packets, binders, and forms for patients, staff, and other events. Behind me is a wall of informational and educational information that I helped locate for patients. During my time, I became very familiar with many different computer programs including: PowerPoint, excel, word, publisher, outlook, EPIC, and REDCAPS to name a few
  11. 11. + A typical day continued  Everyday was I interned was very different, but here are just a few samples of the work I did daily  Other duties included calling patients to remind them of appointments  Mailed patients information about upcoming appointments or events at the Cancer Institute  Searched through patient records to find dates of cancer history for the cancer registry  Created and organized files of consent forms for two current studies—both in paper and electronic format
  12. 12. + Mindfulness Intervention to Improve Symptomology Among Cancer Survivors  I helped coordinate/facilitate the Cancer Institute’s study on Mindfulness  It was a randomized interventional study whose purpose was to see if a 4 week class on mindfulness helped to reduce stress and anxiety in cancer survivors  There were two arms of the study, one in the fall and one in the spring  Both trials had 10 individuals in the control group and 10 individuals in the intervention group with a total of 40 participants in the study altogether
  13. 13. + Mindfulness Study Continued... The curriculum used in the mindfulness study became a class open to all Cancer Institute patients. I made this poster for the class to educate patients on the benefits of mindfulness.
  14. 14. + Mindfulness study data collection This is me with fellow research associate getting ready for data collection with all the mindfulness study participants. After getting their blood drawn and filling out a survey, they came to us to be weighed and fitted for an armband which collected their heart rate, activity level, and calories burned for an entire week.
  15. 15. + Entering information into RedCaps This is a photo of me at my desk entering information into the database RedCaps. I was responsible for keeping the database up to date with all of the lung cancer screening questionnaires. I worked closely with the nurse navigator for the smoking cessation program on this (see more on next slides)
  16. 16. + Working with two of the nurse navigators
  17. 17. + Nurse Navigators  The nurse navigators play a critical role at the cancer institute  They are there for the patients from the moment of diagnosis all the way through into survivorship care and follow ups  The nurse navigators help connect patients to different resources as well as screening, diagnosis, and treatment to supportive and end- of-life care  One nurse navigator I worked with ran a smoking cessation program  I helped her enter patient data into a database on REDCAPS  I also had the privilege of shadowing a few of the patients seen by the nurse navigators in the lifetime clinic
  18. 18. + Fundraising I represented the Greenville Cancer Institute by myself at a local fundraiser in Clemson, South Carolina. The fundraiser was put on by students in the theater department, and all proceeds went to the music therapy program at the cancer institute. I helped pass out flyers and educate people about the free music therapy program at GHS.
  19. 19. +Dragon Boat Fundraiser Breakfast Bar (pictured second from the right)
  20. 20. + Dragon Boat Fundraiser Continued  The dragon boat fundraiser is the Cancer Institute’s Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship’s biggest fundraiser  The dragon boat fundraiser is a rowing competition that raises money for cancer research and survivorship programs  The breakfast bar was to raise money for this event and promote awareness  I helped to setup and run the event which raised around $300  We had three tables set up in the employee pavilion, and then I also helped roll a table around the hospital as a mobile breakfast bar
