Software design has unfortunately not evolved at a similar pace. The
gap between designers and engineers has only increased. Design
teams can often struggle to reach a cadence that balances the creative
process and cycles of continuous innovation. Quality suffers, the
experience becomes less cohesive, and talented people spend an
inordinate amount of time simply managing communication across
disciplines.

The main goal of a design language is to
create focus and clarity for designers. A
design language is like any language. If there
is any confusion it will cause a breakdown in
communication.
Focus
Allow the designer to focus clearly on the
project at hand rather then to be diverted by
other distractions.
Clarity
Allow the designer to think clearly about our design
beliefs as well as the design constraints in place
across the platform
Confidence
Allow the designer to have complete
confidence in what they are designing and
that it is inline with others in the team.
Consistency
Create consistency across the product which in
turn will create a secure, familiar experience
across the platform.
Efficiency
Create understanding across the teams,
meaning less time consumed concentrating
on the less important details.
A Unified Design Language Shouldn’t Be Just
A Set Of Static Rules And Individual Atoms; It
Should Be An Evolving Ecosystem.

For each change or addition to the system, a
cascade of work is created. Documentation
has to be updated, each of our apps’ code has
to be changed (in Swift, Java, and
JavaScript), and Sketch templates have to be
redrawn.

These efforts have to be coordinated, and each source
must always be in sync with the others. Code is relatively
easy to tie together, and we already have an infrastructure
that allows for version control and continuous integration of
our applications. Until now though, maintaining Sketch
templates relied on manually-intensive human touch points.

  • 11. Design System Language The main goal of a design language is to create focus and clarity for designers. A design language is like any language. If there is any confusion it will cause a breakdown in communication.
  • 12. Focus Allow the designer to focus clearly on the project at hand rather then to be diverted by other distractions.
  • 13. Clarity Allow the designer to think clearly about our design beliefs as well as the design constraints in place across the platform
  • 14. Confidence Allow the designer to have complete confidence in what they are designing and that it is inline with others in the team.
  • 15. Consistency Create consistency across the product which in turn will create a secure, familiar experience across the platform.
  • 16. Efficiency Create understanding across the teams, meaning less time consumed concentrating on the less important details.
  • 17. A Unified Design Language Shouldn’t Be Just A Set Of Static Rules And Individual Atoms; It Should Be An Evolving Ecosystem.
  • 18. Working In Progress For each change or addition to the system, a cascade of work is created. Documentation has to be updated, each of our apps’ code has to be changed (in Swift, Java, and JavaScript), and Sketch templates have to be redrawn.
  • 19. Working In Progress These efforts have to be coordinated, and each source must always be in sync with the others. Code is relatively easy to tie together, and we already have an infrastructure that allows for version control and continuous integration of our applications. Until now though, maintaining Sketch templates relied on manually-intensive human touch points.
