Editor's Notes
The Coming Day of the Lord 3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. A New Heaven and Earth 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation
CLICK: very interesting hydrological system “waters above”(2 Pet. 3:5; Gen. 1:6-9) another difference was in the mist which went up and no rain (Gen. 2:5, 6). Universal sin brought destruction of the earth by God by water (Gen. 6:12). God continues after the flood with the placement of the rainbow in the clouds promising to never use water to destroy the earth (Gen. 9:13-16). CLICK: world-wide destruction (Gen. 7:19-21). CLICK: Psalm. 104:6-9; universal sin (Rom. 3:23) CLICK: Scripture doesn’t tell us about the composition of the new heaven and earth other than that it would have to be a spiritual place for a spiritual body & that there is no sin there. Righteousness dwells. Sin dwells here now, but righteousness there when the 2 nd judgment comes. Earth’s history could pretty much be summed up as a history of sin with few remnants of righteousness.
We have in our text one of the few references made in scripture pertaining to the order of events in the last day & surprisingly, there is no mention of the earthly personal reign of Christ on earth for 1000 years. If such were the case, it would seem most appropriate to mention it here. Instead, we find the opposite … the world passes away & a new order is issued in.
RE: 1 Cor. 15, The resurrection is as sure as Christ is! To deny the resurrection is to deny Christ, the apostles, the church, the Bible and it all. RE: Phil. 3:9-14, Paul’s pursuit and motive to continue on was based on the resurrection! He considers it a prize to press on for. Without the resurrection & the redemption found in Christ’s death, there really is not much motivation to press on. Jesus’ resurrection is the basis for ours and so we need to be in Him that we may be raised by him into eternal life.
1 Pictured here is Christ’s judgment seat. 2 “Small and Great” (everyone, rich and poor, male and female, bond and free king and peasant) 3 Judged by works and the works are judged by the things in the books. The books may be contain the deeds of each individual, but these deeds are measured against what is written in the Book of God.
RE: 1 Peter 4:17, Christians can suffer for simply being a Christian (v. 16). This is considered the beginning of judgment as it is first directed to God’s people to try, test, and prove themselves genuine. Many fall away & chase the world more than the word & prove themselves unfit for the kingdom of heaven. But the other point should never go dismissed. If God so tests His own people, justice will be given to those who do not obey the gospel. Many of the next points are subjective to this 1st point. RE: Heb. 3:12. Please note that is possible for you to be saved and later lost. Brethren can develop a heart of unbelief. Unbelief doesn’t necessarily happen over night, however. It generally comes with a seed of doubt that falls into our heart and in time begins to germinate and grow. Unbelief may stem from many different sources. It could be pride and found fame, it could be the desires of the world or caving into cravings of the flesh. It could be from some sorrow, the death of a loved one, or friend. It could be from the effect of a well respected one who falls away. Look at the decisions you have made this year and compare their spiritual quality to last year. Are they better decisions or worse? Are your daily decisions generally weaker or stronger than last year? How about 5 years ago?
RE: Heb. 5:9 - Obedience to the Lord brings eternal salvation to the believer. RE: Rev. 2:10 – Faithfulness to the Lord until death will bring the crown of life.
