  7. 7. 2-1 Functions of Socialization• What is “Socialization”?• Socialization is dynamic and not static in human progress,that it plays an effective part in social change.• Sociologists and social psychologists define “Socialization”as the process of learning one’s culture and how to livewithin it.7

Cultural Transmission• Cultural transmission in school focuses on:• What is taught• Answering questions:• What culture is transmitted?• What should be transmitted?• What should be the goals of the curriculum?• Curriculum content is influenced by certain concerns andtrends in society, teachers and school administrators mayexpresses preferences for certain materials and classroomorganization and reject others; so as the structure,composition, hierarchy, philosophy, and the architectureof any one school influences the curriculum contentwithin that school.12

Cultural Transmission• Cultural transmission is a universal process, seriousthoughts are very much concern on what culture shouldbe transmitted.• There are expectations concerning ideas about the“Products” that school should produce.• These expectations are built into the curriculum thatprovides for instruction in areas seen as desirable throughthe planned experiences in line with the concerns and trendsin the society.13

School?• Schools are believed to serve the crucial function ofpreparing young people for society (Parsons, 1959)• School are one place where individuals and communitiescan dig in and take a stand; where in other institutionsthis might be uncontrollable.• Any decision about the content of the curriculumrepresents broader issues about power and control ofpeople’s lives, what happen to their children, and changesin their communities.14

Learning?• Learning is process that is not only influenced by theteacher, but a myriad of other factors such as the teachingtechniques, classroom setting, formal or informalmaterials, child’s ability, motivation, interest in thesubject matter, readiness to learn, retentiveness, valuesand attitudes, relationship with the teacher feelings aboutself, relationship with peers, background experiences,environmental pressures for learning, family support forlearning, and the atmosphere of the school and classroom.• There are 2 issues related to passing on culture :• What teaching techniques are most effective in producinglearning outcomes; and• What role critical thinking plays in education15

F. of social control & PersonalDevelopment• What is “Social Control”?• Social Control includes social mechanism – cross cultural(Emile Durkheim called this forms of social control isRegulation) – that regulate individual and group behavior,leading to conformity and compliances to the rules of agiven society or social group.16
