5. Three Interlinked Goals
Expand the scope of the work of IPTC
Broaden participation in IPTC
Ensure IPTC stays financially viable
www.iptc.org 5
6. Expanding Scope of IPTC’s Work
• More than just creating technical standards
– EXTRA news classification rules engine
– VideoMetadataHub
– News credibility
• Introducing new standards and areas of work
– Images recognition? Entities? AR / VR / XR? AI and ML?
• Revive standards work
– Ninjs? Semantic web / schema.org? Rights and restrictions?
• Membership sets agenda – and does all the work
– The Board doesn’t dictate the IPTC agenda, it supports it

9. Member segmentation
• We can divide our current members into the
following groups…
– National news agencies (21 members in April
2019)
– Systems vendors and integrators (14)
– Consultants (8)
– International news agencies (6)
– Photo/image agencies (6)
– Industry associations (5)
– Publishers and broadcasters (3)
– Academic / Research (1)
www.iptc.org 9
10. Broaden Participation in IPTC
• Recruit members who are similar to those we already have
– National and international news agencies, system vendors and integrators, photo agencies
• Recruit members who are currently under-represented in IPTC
– Publishers, broadcasters, video agencies, academic and research organizations
– Organizations head-quartered outside of Europe and North America
• Ideally IPTC membership should reflect the global news and media industry
– Does the work of the IPTC – which is driven by the current membership – appeal to
under-represented groups?
– Are the face-to-face meetings relevant and welcoming to all?
– Should we hold meetings in “other” locations? Meetings in China, UK, USA, Portugal,
Germany have had the highest attendance over the last decade
• Can you suggest other organizations we should recruit?
www.iptc.org 10
11. Update Vision and Mission
• Does the current vision statement best reflect IPTC?
The IPTC is the global standards body of the news media. We provide
the technical foundation for the news ecosystem.
• A new statement (more inclusive – or too broad?)
IPTC is the leading representative of the technology side of the media
business.
• What should our mission statement be? One suggestion:
By creating open standards, sharing best practices and facilitating
collaborations between media and technology organisations, IPTC
helps media organisations to succeed.
www.iptc.org 11
12. Enhancing Voting Membership
• IPTC is a membership organization
– Membership fees are by far the main source of revenue
– We have considered adding other forms of revenue - and we still may
• The foundational membership level is voting member
– Most of the revenue comes from voting members
– Voting members determine the overall future of the IPTC
• Key challenge is increasing the number of voting members
– Without restricting participation by associate or individual members
– Started to enhance voting member benefits, e.g. homepage promotion
– We wish to attract more voting members and encourage associate members
to upgrade
www.iptc.org 12
13. How Can You Help?
• Suggest new topics for IPTC to work on – and volunteer to be part of these new
efforts
• Volunteer to help revive older efforts – including the PR Committee
• Suggest new organizations and people who might be interested in IPTC
• Suggest locations for future face-to-face meetings
• Feedback on vision and mission?
• Suggestions for ways to enhance voting membership further?
• On Wednesday afternoon, we will have scheduled time to discuss these ideas
• Feel free to also discuss with any of the Board Directors
• Formal changes would likely be voted on at the October 2019 AGM
