Dear Colleague,
Welcome to SMi’s annual Air Mission Planning and Support Conference, to be
held on the 21st and 22nd April 2020 at the St James’ Court Hotel, London, United
Kingdom. The theme of the conference this year is: Maximising Air Power Support
Systems for Airborne Missions.
The organisers hope to create a truly holistic conference, with briefs covering
advanced flight training, through to (pre)flight data management systems, the
planning and execution of a breadth of air missions. Fast-jet, heavy lift and rotary
are all set to be covered.
There is due to be an outstanding array of speakers, from around the world, to
present at the conference. I am looking forward to hearing their views, the latest
developments in mission planning as well as learning lessons from contemporary
operations and exercises. Some of the themes that I will be particularly keen to
explore are interoperability, system security against cyber threats, information
management and the integration of intelligence information.
Operating in the Information Warfare Age brings many opportunities to
enhance the effectiveness of air power. Equally, our adversaries will seek to
exploit potential vulnerabilities and may be able to respond more quickly than
western military organisations. There is also the potential for the sheer weight of
available information to become unmanageable and reduce mission flexibility.
This brings a few questions to mind:
• What are the implications of multi-domain operations for air mission planning
systems?
• How can air power be integrated more effectively within Joint operations?
• Will new air mission planning systems enable air forces to shorten the Air
Tasking Order planning cycle?
• How can air mission planning systems be integrated with battle space
management processes?
• Are the mission planning requirements for unmanned air systems any different
from other platforms?
• How resilient are modern air mission planning systems in a degraded
environment?
• Can the procurement cycle be shortened to bring new mission planning
systems into service more efficiently?
I am sure that conference attendees will bring many more questions for the
speakers and stimulate a lively debate. I therefore expect this conference to play
a significant role in progressing the agenda for Air Mission Planning and Support
and I look forward to welcoming you all in person.

The theme of the conference this year is: Maximising Air Power Support Systems for Airborne Missions. The organisers hope to create a truly holistic conference, with briefs covering advanced flight training, through to (pre)flight data management systems, the planning and execution of a breadth of air missions. Fast-jet, heavy lift and rotary are all set to be covered. There is due to be an outstanding array of speakers, from around the world, to present at the conference. I am looking forward to hearing their views, the latest developments in mission planning as well as learning lessons from contemporary operations and exercises. Some of the themes that I will be particularly keen to explore are interoperability, system security against cyber threats, information management and the integration of intelligence information. Operating in the Information Warfare Age brings many opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of air power. Equally, our adversaries will seek to exploit potential vulnerabilities and may be able to respond more quickly than western military organisations. There is also the potential for the sheer weight of available information to become unmanageable and reduce mission flexibility. This brings a few questions to mind: • What are the implications of multi-domain operations for air mission planning systems? • How can air power be integrated more effectively within Joint operations? • Will new air mission planning systems enable air forces to shorten the Air Tasking Order planning cycle? • How can air mission planning systems be integrated with battle space management processes? • Are the mission planning requirements for unmanned air systems any different from other platforms? • How resilient are modern air mission planning systems in a degraded environment? • Can the procurement cycle be shortened to bring new mission planning systems into service more efficiently? I am sure that conference attendees will bring many more questions for the speakers and stimulate a lively debate. I therefore expect this conference to play a significant role in progressing the agenda for Air Mission Planning and Support and I look forward to welcoming you all in person.
