The acquisition provided the United States with a strategic harbor at Pago Pago and a presence in the Pacific to compete with other world powers like Germany for influence in the region.

Major figures in its history include William Seward who orchestrated the deeds of cession of Tutuila and Aunu'u to the United States in 1900, and Malietoa Laupepa who was the last King or Tafa'ifa of Samoa.
