- Take video of the audience. I’m excited to be here to discuss using Youtube in a public library context. I was at the Ontario Library Conference this past February and attended a conference session about using promotional videos in an academic library but there really wasn’t much about public libraries using it, let alone libraries in the country. So we’re leading the way with our session here. I want to show you something cool. Search Burstall, Shaunavon, Gravelbourg on Youtube.+ Go to Youtube and show the Burstall video
- And of course it’s free and you have no budget. The process of developing these videos was really organic. And like all organic things, gardening, having children, it was a messy process. I wasn’t clear when I began making these video what I was trying to achieve, I just thought it was a cool idea. As I went I saw the possibilities and became more focused about the purpose. I would choose a couple of objectives to and stick to them as you create the content. There are few main types, documenting a library or celebration, promoting an event, promoting a type of book or collection, or showing off programming.
- Open up Windows Movie Maker and show them the program. Pretty much any camera will record video with sound. If you have money get something that is “HD” High Definition Digital – You’ll get a better quality picture. For the Windows Movie Maker, you just need admin rights to load it on your computer. There are nicer programs that are not free and since you never really have that kind of money in rural libraries I didn’t worry about it. Music is a big issue, using copyrighted music will get you pulled instantly from Youtube when someone notices who cares-for example the band whose music it is. Load images from camera.
- Tell the story of failing to get this on the Gravelbourg town site. As well discuss the fact you have a new kind of stat!
