My name is Sam Northcott, I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Sports Coaching and Exercise Science at the University of Canberra.
This is my presentation on coaching the lineout, for the unit Sports Coaching Pedagogy (8914)
2. THE LINEOUT
• The lineout is a method of restarting play when the ball
has gone into touch. The opposing forward packs, line up
in two parallel lines with roughly a one meter gap in
between them.
• The ball is then thrown down the middle of these two lines
usually by the hooker, however any player is able to throw
in at the lineout. The ball is then contested by players who
are lifted into the air by their assisting team mates in an
attempt to catch the ball mid flight.
5. THE JUMPER
• Good footwork
• Quick feet in a linear movement
• A powerful jump
• Explosive vertical movement
• An effective shift from linear movement
to vertical
• Strong body shape in the air
• Straight posture with legs stiff and held
close together
• Hands up ready to receive the ball and
full extension of the arms to catch the
ball at it’s highest point
• Effective communication with thrower
and lifters through both body language
and verbal cues
6. THE LIFTERS
• A low body position
• Straight spine
• Elbows and knees bent,
close to body
• Hands placed just under
the glute muscle
• “Catch” at the peak of
there jump
• Step or drop preceding the
initial lift
• Explosive movement,
remaining close to jumpers
body
• Controlled and safe
lowering of jumper
7. LOOSE PLAYERS
Provide a secondary jumping or lifting option and a good
insurance policy as they are in a good position to clean up
any overthrows, or are used as non jumping option either
receiving the ball from a long throw or as support joining a
maul when the ball has been secured on the ground. They
need to react quickly and play a dynamic role depending on
the outcome of the lineout.
