The importance of listening is clear in most scenarios, even
thought it is not easy to accomplish at times. In my line of work
at a CRO laboratory listening is vitally important in order to
make sure we test the client materials in the exact way they are
paying us to. Clients will come to us wanting us to develop a
method to test a product never before seen on the market. We
customize this testing to exactly what the client wants and
because of that we need to make sure we listen to their
requirements. A lot of the conversations with clients happen
over the phone so while we are not able to gauge body language
with the conversations we can focus on the non-verbal phone-
language. The ultimate goal of our calls is to make sure both
parties are on the same page and often when one party is
confused or stumbling it can be noticed by extended pauses, or
extended "uhhhhh" or "ummmm" being heard across the line.
We all know that listening is important but listening is not a
learned skill. So how do you get good or improve your listening
skills? One thing that has really helped me has been listening to
audio books. A plague in my family is interrupting others when
they are talking. I do it with my family but it has made some of
my relationships more strenuous because people typically do not
take kindly to it. Listening to audio books has forced me to pay
attention and listen no matter what because if I lose focus for
even a second I could miss something vital to the story. I am
now not only able to listen while I work, I listen effectively.

William Ury made an interesting point by stating that listening
is the missing half of the communication. He then went on to
state that even though we live in an age of communication
where there are a lot of texts, tweets and emails going on, how
much listening can there be with so much interruption and
distraction. During my rotations, we were presented with a lot
of verbal and written information and it is important to grab
onto the key specifications that would define the course of
treatment for a patient. Hence, I completely agree with the fact
that listening to the key points a person is trying to get across
could make all the difference during communication.
Another key thing William Ury mentioned that really stuck with
me is that listening helps us build rapport and trust. I always
wondered during my hospital rotations that why is it that even
after a nurse has asked and written down patient symptoms,
does a PA or a doctor or a pharmacist repeat the same questions.
One would think asking the same questions would irritate the
patient but now looking back on it, every single patient felt
rather relieved answering the questions before receiving their
medications from the pharmacist knowing they had just
answered the same questions for the nurse previously.
When it comes to non-verbal cues, I agree with the
literature stating that they are clearly a crucial element and
without them, most of the richness and much of the meaning in
messages would be lost. In the field of medicine, non-verbal
cues are used to show empathy and provide assurance to the
patients. It is important that the healthcare team remains calm
and provide comfort for a patient in need by using both words
and non-verbal gestures. I feel like if one’s gestures don’t
match their words, then the information’s credibility is
definitely questioned by the receiver and in the field of
medicine, it could be the difference in someone keeping their
hope and will to fight alive.

In the post-cold war, the paper will be focusing on rogue states
as the strategic concern and the first Persian Gulf War to be a
confrontation approach to Saddam Hussein’s rogue state.
· HISTORY AND ISSUES
· THE DOMINO THEORY
By the onset of 1950, the inhabitants of the U.S foreign policy
were strongly convinced that due to the fall of Indochina to
communism would rapidly lead to many other countries in
Southeast Asia falling to communism. The Domino theory was
then included in the Indochina report and by 1954, during the
Vietnam battle, President Dwight articulated the same as the
falling Domino standard. President Dwight feared that the loss
of Vietnam to communist control would similarly lead to other
countries neighboring Vietnam into communist states. President
Dwight’s frequent use of Domino theory made the principle
famous and it was widely used as shorthand to illustrate the
strategic importance of South Vietnam to the U.S and also an
attempt to contain the rapid growth of communism throughout
the world. To curtail the rapid spread of communism in
Southeast Asia, the U.S chose to be deeply involved in the
Vietnam War. After the Geneva conference, the French-Viet
Minh war occurred and this split Vietnam along the latitude
which is famously referred to as the 17th parallel. The United
States was at the forefront of the SEATO organization, which
was just an organization of nations that were committed to
taking actions against countries that poised as security threats
within the region (Schultz, 1992. p. 462).

· PERSIAN GULF WAR
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein directed the incursion of the
bordering country Kuwait in early 1990, astonished by this
move, other Islamic states informed the United States as the
superpower and further western States to intervene. Hussein
disobeyed the United Nations security command to extract from
Kuwait by mid-1991, and this sparked the start of the Persian
Gulf War, through different operations, the U.S led air
operations identified as procedure desert storm. After about 42
days of endlessly attacking from the pounded as well as the air,

ceasefire was declared by President Bush on February 28, 1991,
by this period maximum of the Iraqi militaries had either fled or
submitted (Bush, 1991). The U.S president together with other
western allied forces condemned the invasion of Kuwait.
From the Gulf War, it is regarded that a decisive victory for the
coalition, although Kuwait and Iraqi suffered vehemently
through this damage, although Saddam Hussein was not evicted
from power, the aftermath of the war saw a damning ravage to
his reign.
Comparison
On equaling the Vietnam War and the first Persian Gulf war, the
United States in the Persian Gulf war had an advantage of many
states, the U.S was not fighting the war for their own good
rather keep the much-needed peace in Kuwait. The Vietnamese
war was preventing the spread of Communism in Southeast
Asia, this was majorly an American war to protect capitalism
hence suffered a disadvantage of no support from allied forces.
Another advantage of the Persian Gulf War is the use of more
sophisticated and weapons against the Iraqi forces on a more
open ceasefire (Schultz, 1992. p. 432). While the Vietnam War
was a collaboration with likeminded states to stump out
Communism and avoid its spread. Also, the inhabitants of
Kuwait suffered injuries and deaths due to this war.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the different period when these wars happened
signifies a lot, America as a superpower has the advantage of
protecting her rights using any strategy they seem fit. The

Vietnam War was an advancement of American rights while in
the Persian Gulf War, the fight was to liberate Kuwait and
restore peace. In the future, it is more prudent to approach
challenging issues with more caution and put into consideration
mediation. Through mediation, an issue might be duly dealt
with without escalating to loss of lives and property.

Sources and Tips for Assignment 3 (History 105; Prof.
Stansbury)
LENGTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Each paper in our class is a
5-paragraph essay, plus there is a title page (=cover page) at the
start and a Sources list at the end. The body of the paper is to
be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five
paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500
minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the
paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a
guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble. To determine
length, I look at the BODY of the paper only (not title page or
sources list) and consider primarily the word count. (Microsoft
Word makes this easy. Just select from the first line of your
first paragraph to the last line of your last paragraph. The
word-count is provided on the lower left by MS-Word.). [I do
not go by number of pages because there are too many ways that
gets fudged by margins, font size, line spacing, etc. However,
fyi---Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of
your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length—add a page
for your title page and another for your sources list and that
then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2.]
Your paper must have a numbered list of sources at the end
combined with short in-text citations to those sources in the
body of the paper. Any direct quote needs both quote marks
and an in-text citation to the source. Any paraphrase or
summary of information from a source requires an in-text
citation to that source.
Use ONLY the sources designated and listed for this
assignment. If for some reason you must use additional
sources, do NOT google for them—use the university’s online
library.
In this assignment, do NOT include long quotes of 4 lines or
more. The paper is too short for that. Keep any quotes short
and clearly marked with quote marks and a citation. Most of
the paper should be you using mostly your words while using
and summarizing information from your sources, as well as
commenting and developing the paper according to the
instructions. TIP: Before writing your paper, brainstorm first
and make a general list or outline of each paragraph and what it
will include. Use the class text for examples or specific
information, and jot down the page numbers where you found
that information. Do the same with other sources used. This
will make your writing of the paper much easier. Then, start
typing a rough draft. Plan to revise and edit yourself; allot time
to polish the paper before you finally submit. Procrastination is
the enemy of quality.
--------------------
ON THE NEXT PAGE—How to list and how to cite the sources
in your paper. Each of the three topics as shown on the
instruction sheet, had sources show by link and short
identification. On the next two pages, you will see how each of
those sources looks in an in-text citation (in the body of the
paper, and how each on looks on an SWS style list of sources at
the end of your paper. Obviously, focus on the part related to
the topic you chose. Chapters 24-through-29 of the class text
have relevant info for Assignment 3, but focus on the pages
listed for this topic. When citing the class text (or any book),
the in-text citation should include specific page numbers where
the information was found. With an eBook, normally you can
click on the screen and the page number will appear on the
lower left of the screen.

History 105: Due Week 9 and worth 120 points (Dr.
Stansbury)
Submission deadline: 11:59pm Eastern Time; Tuesday night,
December 3
(one day extension due
to Thanksgiving break)
In Assignment 3, we ask you to write about America’s
international superpower role for the long period since World
War II to the present using a Writing Guide provided in
Blackboard. Your paper must use a minimum of three sources
from the list provided below.
Your first step to completing this paper is to pick your topic.
Below you will find two lists—one refers to Cold War period
(1947–1990) examples of confrontation and one list provides
examples of confrontations occurring in the Post-Cold War
period (1991–Present). Each example will involve a specific
strategic concern and confrontation. Review the examples below
and choose one strategic concern and one confrontation from
each time period to focus on in your paper. Once you have
chosen your examples, review the sources noted below. Besides
this instruction sheet and the Writing Guide, be sure to review
the other helps (documents or video) provided by your
instructor. For information on the SWS format, see the “Strayer
Writing Standards” tab on the lower left of your Blackboard
course shell.
Cold War examples—choose one strategic concern and one
confrontation that illustrates that concern:
Cold War strategic concerns: Containment, Domino
Theory, “MAD Doctrine”
Cold War confrontations: Berlin Airlift; Korean War;
Vietnam War; Cuban Missile Crisis
Post-Cold War examples—choose one strategic concern and one
confrontation that illustrates that concern:
Post-cold War strategic concerns: Terrorism, Rogue States;
WMD

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
· Use Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different
than other formats like APA. Please take a moment to review
the SWS documentation for details.
· Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New
Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with
one-inch margins on all sides; citations and sources must follow
SWS format. You must have a Sources list at the end; each
source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an
in-text citation. Check with your professor for any additional
instructions.
· The preferred file software is Microsoft Word (part of MS-
Office). Alternatively, a student can use Windows’ WordPad
(not NotePad) or OpenOffice. (Please do not submit files in
.pdf format or Apple’s Pages or Google docs.)
· Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the
student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the
date. The cover page and the Sources page are not included in
the required assignment page length.
· The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of
500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you
really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that.
The 800 maximum is a loose guideline. The body of the paper
is to be double-spaced. Typically, if you follow these
instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages
in length—add a page for your title page and another for your
sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2. But, the length
requirement is evaluated by word count.
The paper must be submitted (uploaded and attached) in the
course shell provided online.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this
assignment are:
· Discuss the rise of the United States to a world “superpower”
from 1940 to present day and how the formal international
policies of government influenced the role of America as a
policeman of the world. --------------------------------------------
--- [Grading rubric on next 3 pages]

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality,
logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills,
using the following rubric (rubric continues here on p. 3 and to
p. 4 and 5 below).

ASSIGNMENT 3: THE WRITING GUIDE (Prof. Stansbury;
HIS105):
In your five paragraph essay using this Writing Guide, use the
Schultz class text and the two other sources provided for the
topic. (You must use those three; and three is the MINIMUM
number of sources for this assignment.). This third assignment
also lists five other sources—feel free to draw more sources for
your paper from that list of five. Note, you need to include a
list of Sources at the end of your paper (next page below); also
you must cite each of those sources in the body of your paper
with short in-text citations. Be sure to review the instruction
sheet for Assignment 3. Also, see the help sheet called
“Sources and Tips for Assignment 3”. That help sheet also
explains about length and provides other tips.
Introduction
In your introduction section, complete each step listed in the
bullets below. Your answer should be one paragraph in length:
· Identify the two examples you will discuss—one from the
Cold War period (1947–1990); another from the Post-Cold War
period (1991-Present). Each example involves a strategic
concern and a confrontation.
· Inform the reader that you will be discussing the history and
issues related to your examples as well as comparing the two
examples.
HISTORY AND ISSUES
In two paragraphs: Describe briefly the background of your
example from the Cold War period (1947–1990) of a strategic
concern and confrontation. Establish the general time period,
key leaders, and any outcome. Then, do the same for your Post-
Cold War example (from 1991–Present).
COMPARISON
In your comparison paragraph, compare the different historical
contexts and strategic concerns and the outcomes. What do you
see as the strengths and weakness in each example?
CONCLUSION
In your conclusion paragraph, consider your examples as they
illuminate today’s international issues and America’s role in the
world. What lessons can we learn from these examples? How do
you think we should approach the future strategically?

HIS105--HOW TO SUBMIT THE THIRD PAPER (Assignment
3 in Week 9):
In the Week 9 unit: Scroll down and find the large blue
heading/link Assignment 3: America as Superpower—
Confrontation in a Nuclear Age (1947-Present). (Under it are
little links to documents and a video--be sure you use those in
doing your paper). Once you have your paper on a Word
document--and have it polished and ready to submit--and have
the file named the way you want and saved in a folder you know
on your computer----THEN---
1. Click on that large blue link Assignment 3: America as
Superpower—Confrontation in a Nuclear Age (1947-Present) in
the Week 9 unit.
2. This takes you to a new page that at the top says
"Assignment 3 Submission"--it is a link; click on those three
words.
3. This takes you to a new page that says ASSIGNMENT
INFORMATION near the top. Once there, scroll all the way
down. Near the bottom of the page you will see a tab--a tool--
called "Browse My Computer"--click on that and use it to find
your paper on your computer--and upload/attach it. (There is
no need to type anything in the "Add Comments" area--just
leave that blank). Once you upload it--then click "Submit" on
the lower right of the web page. That should submit your
paper.
4. Your Blackboard gradebook will flash some sort of color
or symbol showing you have submitted.

Check your postings for accuracy of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Remember, this is a communications course. Posted by Student: The importance of listening is clear in most scenarios, even thought it is not easy to accomplish at times. In my line of work at a CRO laboratory listening is vitally important in order to make sure we test the client materials in the exact way they are paying us to. Clients will come to us wanting us to develop a method to test a product never before seen on the market. We customize this testing to exactly what the client wants and because of that we need to make sure we listen to their requirements. A lot of the conversations with clients happen over the phone so while we are not able to gauge body language with the conversations we can focus on the non-verbal phone- language. The ultimate goal of our calls is to make sure both parties are on the same page and often when one party is confused or stumbling it can be noticed by extended pauses, or extended "uhhhhh" or "ummmm" being heard across the line. We all know that listening is important but listening is not a learned skill. So how do you get good or improve your listening skills? One thing that has really helped me has been listening to audio books. A plague in my family is interrupting others when they are talking. I do it with my family but it has made some of my relationships more strenuous because people typically do not take kindly to it. Listening to audio books has forced me to pay attention and listen no matter what because if I lose focus for even a second I could miss something vital to the story. I am now not only able to listen while I work, I listen effectively.

Posted by Student: William Ury made an interesting point by stating that listening is the missing half of the communication. He then went on to state that even though we live in an age of communication where there are a lot of texts, tweets and emails going on, how much listening can there be with so much interruption and distraction. During my rotations, we were presented with a lot of verbal and written information and it is important to grab onto the key specifications that would define the course of treatment for a patient. Hence, I completely agree with the fact that listening to the key points a person is trying to get across could make all the difference during communication. Another key thing William Ury mentioned that really stuck with me is that listening helps us build rapport and trust. I always wondered during my hospital rotations that why is it that even
  • 5. after a nurse has asked and written down patient symptoms, does a PA or a doctor or a pharmacist repeat the same questions. One would think asking the same questions would irritate the patient but now looking back on it, every single patient felt rather relieved answering the questions before receiving their medications from the pharmacist knowing they had just answered the same questions for the nurse previously. When it comes to non-verbal cues, I agree with the literature stating that they are clearly a crucial element and without them, most of the richness and much of the meaning in messages would be lost. In the field of medicine, non-verbal cues are used to show empathy and provide assurance to the patients. It is important that the healthcare team remains calm and provide comfort for a patient in need by using both words and non-verbal gestures. I feel like if one’s gestures don’t match their words, then the information’s credibility is definitely questioned by the receiver and in the field of medicine, it could be the difference in someone keeping their hope and will to fight alive. THE U.S GOVERNMENT JUSTIFIED HER INVOLVEMENT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA THROUGH THE DISCREDITED DOMINO THEORY IN THE VIETNAM WAR AND TO OFFER SUPPORT TO A NON-COMMUNIST DICTATOR IN SOUTH VIETNAM. Regardless of the failure of the American government to prevent acommunist victory, the proponents of the domino theory view it with less magnitude (Schultz, 1992. p. 545). 4APART FROM CAMBODIA AND LAOS, COMMUNISTS FAILED TOFURTHER SPREAD IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. The Domino theory was then included in the Indochina report and by 1954, during the Vietnam battle, President Dwight articulated the same as the falling Domino standard. President Dwight feared that the loss of Vietnam to communist control would similarly lead to other countries neighboring Vietnam into communist states. President Dwight’s frequent use of Domino theory made the principle famous and it was widely used as shorthand to illustrate the strategic importance of South Vietnam to the U.S and also an attempt to contain the rapid growth of communism throughout the world. To curtail the rapid spread of communism in Southeast Asia, the U.S chose to be deeply involved in the Vietnam War. After the Geneva conference, the French-Viet Minh war occurred and this split Vietnam along the latitude which is famously referred to as the 17th parallel. The United States was at the forefront of the SEATO organization, which was just an organization of nations that were committed to

  • 11. On equaling the Vietnam War and the first Persian Gulf war, the United States in the Persian Gulf war had an advantage of many states, the U.S was not fighting the war for their own good rather keep the much-needed peace in Kuwait. The Vietnamese war was preventing the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia, this was majorly an American war to protect capitalism hence suffered a disadvantage of no support from allied forces. Another advantage of the Persian Gulf War is the use of more sophisticated and weapons against the Iraqi forces on a more open ceasefire (Schultz, 1992. p. 432). While the Vietnam War was a collaboration with likeminded states to stump out Communism and avoid its spread. Also, the inhabitants of Kuwait suffered injuries and deaths due to this war. Conclusion In conclusion, the different period when these wars happened signifies a lot, America as a superpower has the advantage of protecting her rights using any strategy they seem fit. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500
  • 24. minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble. To determine length, I look at the BODY of the paper only (not title page or sources list) and consider primarily the word count. (Microsoft Word makes this easy. Just select from the first line of your first paragraph to the last line of your last paragraph. The word-count is provided on the lower left by MS-Word.). [I do not go by number of pages because there are too many ways that gets fudged by margins, font size, line spacing, etc. However, fyi---Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length—add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2.] Your paper must have a numbered list of sources at the end combined with short in-text citations to those sources in the body of the paper. Any direct quote needs both quote marks and an in-text citation to the source. Any paraphrase or summary of information from a source requires an in-text citation to that source. Use ONLY the sources designated and listed for this assignment. If for some reason you must use additional sources, do NOT google for them—use the university’s online library. In this assignment, do NOT include long quotes of 4 lines or more. The paper is too short for that. Keep any quotes short and clearly marked with quote marks and a citation. Most of the paper should be you using mostly your words while using and summarizing information from your sources, as well as commenting and developing the paper according to the instructions. TIP: Before writing your paper, brainstorm first and make a general list or outline of each paragraph and what it will include. Use the class text for examples or specific information, and jot down the page numbers where you found that information. Do the same with other sources used. This will make your writing of the paper much easier. Then, start

Procrastination is the enemy of quality. -------------------- ON THE NEXT PAGE—How to list and how to cite the sources in your paper. Each of the three topics as shown on the instruction sheet, had sources show by link and short identification. On the next two pages, you will see how each of those sources looks in an in-text citation (in the body of the paper, and how each on looks on an SWS style list of sources at the end of your paper. Obviously, focus on the part related to the topic you chose. Chapters 24-through-29 of the class text have relevant info for Assignment 3, but focus on the pages listed for this topic. When citing the class text (or any book), the in-text citation should include specific page numbers where the information was found. With an eBook, normally you can click on the screen and the page number will appear on the lower left of the screen. p. 2 TOPIC FOR ASSIGNMENT 3: America as Superpower— Confrontation in a Nuclear Age (1947-Present) Sources: Schultz, p. 462–7, 485–8, 499–506, 535–540, 560–7. In the sample list below, I selected items 4 and 5. You might select others. ). On this assignment, the Schultz text is a required source. You must use the other two sources given above. THREE is the minimum source requirement. You might use others that you draw from the additional list of five.

(1947-Present) History 105: Due Week 9 and worth 120 points (Dr. Stansbury) Submission deadline: 11:59pm Eastern Time; Tuesday night, December 3 (one day extension due to Thanksgiving break) In Assignment 3, we ask you to write about America’s international superpower role for the long period since World War II to the present using a Writing Guide provided in Blackboard. Your paper must use a minimum of three sources from the list provided below. Your first step to completing this paper is to pick your topic. Below you will find two lists—one refers to Cold War period (1947–1990) examples of confrontation and one list provides examples of confrontations occurring in the Post-Cold War period (1991–Present). Each example will involve a specific strategic concern and confrontation. Review the examples below and choose one strategic concern and one confrontation from each time period to focus on in your paper. Once you have chosen your examples, review the sources noted below. Besides this instruction sheet and the Writing Guide, be sure to review the other helps (documents or video) provided by your instructor. For information on the SWS format, see the “Strayer Writing Standards” tab on the lower left of your Blackboard course shell. Cold War examples—choose one strategic concern and one confrontation that illustrates that concern: Cold War strategic concerns: Containment, Domino Theory, “MAD Doctrine” Cold War confrontations: Berlin Airlift; Korean War; Vietnam War; Cuban Missile Crisis Post-Cold War examples—choose one strategic concern and one

The format is different than other formats like APA. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details. · Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and sources must follow SWS format. You must have a Sources list at the end; each source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an in-text citation. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. · The preferred file software is Microsoft Word (part of MS- Office). Alternatively, a student can use Windows’ WordPad (not NotePad) or OpenOffice. (Please do not submit files in .pdf format or Apple’s Pages or Google docs.) · Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date.
