4. WHAT IS PANDEMIC
• An epidemic refers to a sudden increase in
the number of cases of a disease above what is
normally expected. An epidemic that spreads
globally is a pandemic.
• Examples from past
• Plague of galen (165 -190 AD) 5 million
death
• Plague of Justinian 30-50 million death with
half of european population dead
5. Examples…
• Japanese small pox 2 million Japanese death
• Black death starting from China causing 25
million death eradicating 1/3 of continental
population
• Great plague of London in 1750 causing 100K
deaths
6. Examples…
• Cholera pandemic in India causing 100k death
• Bubonic plague of 1855 causing 12 million
deaths
• Flu pandemic of 1899 causing 1 million death
7. •Examples…
• Spanish flu of 1918 infecting 500 million and
death between 17-50 million
• Asian flu of 1957 with 1-2 million death
• HongKong Influenza of 1968 with a million
death
8. •Examples…
• HIV with infection to 75 million and death to
32 million
• SARS-2003 due to corona virus causing 774
deaths
• MERS-CoV 2014 causing 866 death
9. • EBOLA 2014 causing 11053 death
• Covid-19 causing more than 20k deaths and
still counting
• All pandemics have brought suffering to
general population with wounds that cant be
healed.
13. HOW CORONA IS BEHAVING
• In a study by health department of Vietnam
where six cases of COVID-19 resulting from
transmission were identified.
• This study brings to notice that person with
covid 19 infection may be asymtomatic and
even symptomatic patients may test negative
initially.
vinh phuc department of health
14. Serial Interval is the time from illness onset in a
primary case (infector) to illness onset in a
secondary case (infectee)
• Incubation period- it’s the duration taken after
infection to the manifestation of symptoms of
illness
• Median Serial Interval of COVID-19 at 4.0 days,
while median incubation period is 6.4 days
• It indicates that transmission is rapid and
substantial pre-symptomatic transmissions are
occurring.
15. • Thus, containment via case isolation alone is
likely to be very challenging. Contacts shall be
traced and isolated whether symptomatic or
asymptomatic.
Nishiura et al 2020
• It is spread by human-to-human transmission via
droplets or direct contact, and infection has been
estimated to have mean incubation period of 6.4
days and a basic reproduction number of 2.24–
3.58. It means one infected individual may spread
the infection to 2-3.5 individual.
lai et al 2020
16. • The attack rate of severe acute respiratory
syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from
estimates of the basic reproduction number, R0,
of 2–3, suggests that 50–60% of the population
should eventually be infected because the
population seems to be entirely naive to the new
virus.
• The attack rate on board the Diamond Princess
cruise ship remained slightly below 20% (705 of
3711 passengers and crew members became
infected).
.
17. •CURRENT MEASURES FOR
DAMAGE CONTROL
• So based on various studies and experience from
past various strategies to deal with a pandemic of
such high reproduction rate, small serial interval
and small incubation period includes
• Avoid mass contact
• Case isolation ( symptomatic and asymtomatic)
• Contact tracing (active survelliance)
• Medical readiness for severe condition
• Triage measures
18. • Vaccination trials shall be sought at speedy
level
• Various antiviral and other promising drugs
shall be investigated for.
• Supply chain of essential commodities related
to daily needs and medical supply of drugs,
masks, sanitizers and personal protective
equipment shall be ensured.
19. •COPING STRATEGY FOR
LOCKDOWN
• Man is a social animal and lockdown at home
just brings him at individual level.
• An addiction of past routine hinders with
adjusting to new social development
• stress of personal risk of infection and risk to
relatives presents a very panicky situation for
every individual.
20. 1.Make a routine and adhere to it.
• Set your time to get up from bed and be
thankful to almighty that you are alive today
and some of our earthmates could not make
to see the sunrise.
• Involve in morning routine and care for your
body as this is a precious gift from nature.
21. 2. Catharsis
• There had been bad memories and good in our
life. We always had held responsible someone
for it. Pay thankfulness to those who have
made your life beautiful and forgive others
who had someway hurt you.
• Call them and talk to them
22. 3. Start your inner journey
• According to Maslow we have different needs.
Spiritual and enlightenment are the higher
needs. During this period of isolation going
inwards becomes easy.
• Start with reading of books on spirituality like
Geeta and spend time in chanting mantras and
silent mindfullness meditation where you
watch your breath and thoughts.
23. 4. Learn new things
• We have ignored a lot of our passion and
desires during this busy life. Our interest of
cooking, painting, music , learning new
language, reading books , watching movies
playing video games and so many to do list
has been incomplete. With current presence of
internet and various channels like youtube,
instagram we can fulfill it.
24. 5. Create awareness
• This is a crisis time , so we can spread
awareness among the unprivileged sections of
society by reaching to them over call or other
suitable means. We shall bring to them
authentic information so they don’t fall victim
of scrupulous element. A lot of incident has
been reported where people drank phenyl to
clean themselves.
25. 6. Keep yourself updated with local and national
news
• The district, state and national government are
frequently updating with various changes in
rule so that they keep on changing policy
according to condition.
• Keep updated yourself with the helpline
number and any list of patients present on
government site
26. 7. Simple to do things
• Wash hands regularly
• Keep distance at home also
• Avoid contact with unknown person
• Take general precaution
• Eat fresh vegetables
• Eat immune boosting nutrients
27. 8. Manage your anxiety
• The stress is in and out. Stress brings anxiety..
Few psychological exercise like JACOBSON
PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXTATION
TECHNIQUE, Mindfullness watching of
breath and thought without any judgement
helps in relieving anxiety.
• If it becomes difficult, take help of online
counselling by expert psychologist.
28. 9. Avoid hopelessness and worries
• This stress might cause delay in very
important deadlines to be met and severe loss
in business and health. But sometimes we
shall act as observer of situation and believe
that eventually things has worked in past and
also will in future.
29. 10. Create a to do list
11. Students may take online courses available at
various government sites and from private
institution giving authentic certification
course. Foreign university also has various
program.
