  1. This peace is not just the feeling of being at peace. Such a feeling can come and go depending upon our circumstances. Peace with God is a state. When two countries go to war, there is usually an official declaration of war, but when the war is finished, a state of peace is declared. The fact that we have been pronounced righteous (justified) by God through the work of redemption of the Lord Jesus Christ means that God officially declares a state of peace between us and Him. His wrath has been officially removed.
  2. When I travel overseas there is usually a special lounge in the airport and a special place in the aircraft cabin for First Class passengers – a place that I can only dream about entering. There, the passengers are treated as VIPs and given priority service, much greater comfort, better food, and many other benefits. Such luxury comes at a price that I could never afford. However, ever Christian has obtained access to God’s “VIP Lounge”. When a person is justified they automatically enter into the place of God’s grace.Grace is the kindness of God by which he freely gives undeserved and often unappreciated favour. It is the Grace of God in action in election (Romans 11:5) which enables faith (Acts 18:27), brings salvation (Titus 2:11), and establishes and strengthens the heart (Hebrews 13:9). The Grace of God produces simplicity and godly sincerity (2Corinthians 1:12), enables humility (James 4:6), gives dignity and authority (Ephesians 3:8), brings serenity (contentment and peace of mind) and helps when we are in extremely difficult circumstances (Hebrews 4:16). Grace meets our daily needs, calms our fears, and gives us confidence about our hope in God. It opens doors of service, gives the necessary gifting and power, yet God still says “well done, good and faithful servant!”Knowing that we have peace with God and standing in God’s grace, we can boast with confidence in hope of the glory of God. Without the assurance of peace with God, anticipating the dreadful day of the revelation of God’s glory would strike terror to our hearts, “when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).However, the knowledge of the coming glory of our Lord causes us to rejoice. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”. (Titus 2:11-13)What a blessed hope – Jesus will come! “If I go away”, He told His disciples, “I will come again and receive you unto Myself”. But, what a glorious appearing, “when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed”! (2 Thessalonians 1:10) “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory”. (Colossians 3:3-4)The amazing grace in which we stand causes us to glory, literally to boast in times of tribulation and trouble. “Tribulation” means being pressed or crushed, and what is described is like a process of refinement – imagine the production and refinement of oil from a seed. Tribulation extracts perseverance, or endurance – that is, keeping going under the trial. When we endure, “character” is produced in our lives – that is, what has proven worth and genuineness. As God lovingly removes from us all that worthless what emerges is true godly character. As our character develops through trials, our rejoicing in anticipation of the coming day of His glory and power, and our glorification with Him is formed into ever-increasing hope that can never disappoint. And so the cycle of our sanctification begins and ends with hope in Him and His glory!
  3. This hope does not make us ashamed – it will never disappoint. It cannot disappoint, because it is the result of the love of God, generously poured out in our hearts. What is the basis of the believer’s confidence in God’s power to save – and to keep? It is the love of God. The assurance that all my blessings in Christ are made absolutely sure to me comes from His limitless, causeless and endless love for me! It is the work of the Holy Spirit, given to every believer upon salvation, to minister this appreciation of the love of God to our heart.Look carefully at these verses and see how the Holy Spirit gives confidence in the love of God. It is unlikely that someone would die for a good, righteous person, but Christ died for ungodly sinners! (v6-8) If we have been justified by Christ’s blood (His death), then His resurrection life guarantees our salvation! (v9)If God was willing to make friends of His enemies, how much more will He ensure our salvation now that we are friends indeed. (v10)
  4. Although the believer is able to rejoice greatly in the grace and hope that God has given, as we increase in our relationship with God we begin to rejoice deeply in Him. This is true Christian maturity – an increasingly intimate knowledge of God Himself, through the person of the Lord Jesus. This is seen in our communion with God in His Word and in prayer. We grow to love what He loves, to detest what He detests and to even feel what He feels!
