I learned that we can really enhance our vocabulary by interacting more. What's interesting here, I presented the studies which have proved specifically that by interacting virtually on platforms like ODF, our vocabulary can be enriched so much more.

This is a draft of the presentation that will be given at the HEA Social Sciences annual conference - Teaching forward: the future of the Social Sciences. For further details of the conference: http://bit.ly/1cRDx0p Bookings open until 14 May 2014 http://bit.ly/1hzCMLR or external.events@heacademy.ac.uk ABSTRACT The paper presents the findings of a HEA-CLL funded project focussing on encouraging students to cocreate and use OERs via interdisciplinary study guides on research methods. Students were asked to review the tutor-produced study guides developed on a Google website/wiki and to add resources to the study guide via a comments feature. In focus interviews, they were asked if they were willing to take ownership of the guides. Students’ views on student-led guides indicated an interest in this pedagogical approach, but had issues around trusting their peers’ ability to make reliable judgements. These findings will be explored in our paper.

Presentation by Laurel Schenkoske and Yingfei Chen from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, at the Language Symposium 2012, hosted at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Within the scope of the language classroom, learners cannot truly approach real-life application of their skills. So how can we keep our students motivated to practice outside the classroom? As we know, students send text messages, Facebook updates, and Tweets throughout the day. Why not give them the tools to do this in their new language? While social networking sites seem to be taking over our students lives, we as foreign language teachers can use that to our advantage! We will present the case studies of two different forms of social media at play in our own foreign language department: the Chinese programs Facebook , and the German programs Ning. We examine the similarities, differences, and benefits of both for use in L2 learning, and share some statistics that map their respective uses. We also examine whether task-based assignments achieve the best results on both platforms. Both sites allow for discussion postings, blogs, videos, and polls in which students can practice all four language skills, with a special emphasis on the interpersonal mode of communication. When social media is tied to language learning, it encourages students to play with new vocabulary and structures and helps to foster a community atmosphere. Both Facebook and Ning are well suited to accompany any foreign language classroom. Come see how we use each of them in our own foreign language classrooms, and get ideas to implement them in yours!

Most postgraduate students will have developed research and writing skills while undertaking their undergraduate degree, yet many still find it challenging to meet the expected high standards of independent research and thesis writing. In this video, Michelle describes a project undertaken by Student Learning Support and the School of Psychological Sciences to support students in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) at ACAP, and supported by a Learning and Teaching Grant. The project involved creating a research and writing support site covering topics such as Developing Your Research Proposal, Writing Your Literature Review, and Publishing and Presenting Your Research. Michelle discusses how the team developed the site to complement existing support, showcase some of the resources, and explain how the effectiveness of the project will be measured.
