2. Introduction
• A band knife is a power tool used for cutting cloth. Very
similar in operation to a band saw, it has an endless
loop blade and the material to be cut is supported by a flat
table.
• Band Knife blades are used on two types of machines
depending on the material being cut/processed:
Vertical band knife machine
Horizontal band knife machine

3. Vertical Band Knife Machine
• On a vertical band knife machine usually a narrow width band knife blade
is used, the most common width being 10mm. The length of the band knife
blade depends on the supplier of the band knife machine.
• The dimensions are indicated on a small metal tag pasted or riveted on the
machine.
• The vertical machine band knife blade is most commonly twisted 180
degrees to enable cutting while advancing the table and also while
retracting the work table.
• It has been observed that a narrow width on a vertical band knife machine
gives better dimensional accuracies on the foam block.
• The wider the vertical machine band knife - more the deflection and size
variation from one end to the other extreme end.

4. Horizontal band knife Machine
• Horizontal band knife blades are wider usually
30mm wide for foam converting is popular, for
leather goods 50mm wide blade is popular, 85mm
width is popular for the tannery splitting band knife.
• There are other widths depending on the machine
manufacturer. The horizontal machine band knife
blade is supported by a guide to give dimensional
accuracies while cutting/splitting.

5. Band Knife Machine
• Band Knife is a stationary cutting machine.
They have fine blades that rotate through a slot in the
cutting table while cutting.The operator positions
,controls,and guides the fabric block around the knife.
• They are basically same as band-saw machines the
only major difference are the blade edges ,type and
speed of the machine.
• It consists of a series of three or more pulleys
powered by an electric motor with a continuously
rotating steel blade mounted on them.A Band Knife
Machine is an endless and looks like a loop.

11. Vertical Cutting Stroke Velocity
• The VCSV of a band knife machine is equal to rpm of the
blade.
• The blade of a band knife machine circulates in the basic
shape of standard conveyor belts;two equal parallel lines
whose parallel ends are joined by two semicircles.In such
situations,the blade rpm is equal to the motor rpm times
2 πr where r is the radius from the motor shaft to the
blade’s perimeter in the semicircle where the motor
drives the band Knife.
• In other Band Knife Machines three or more pulleys are
used to circulate the blade.In these machines the blade
VCSV is equal to the velocity of a point on the perimeter
of the drive pulley(s).

12. Advantages of Band Knife Machines
Over Other Cutting Machines
• Band Knives are finer and narrower than
reciprocating blades which makes it easier to
manipulate tight curves and intricate patterns.
• Band Knives are more accurate than vertical knives
when used to cut small blocks.
• The Cutting Pitch of band knife blade is higher than
the pitch of many st.knife blades thus all segments of
the blade gets equal wear n tear.
• Needs less minimum cutting allowance than die
cutters.

14. Disadvantages of Band Knives
• It is not possible to cut the fabric directly from lay.
• Fabric wastage is high.
• Work Load is high as machine is stationary and fabric
is movable.
• Running cost is higher.
• Wouldn’t be used for cutting a whole spread or large
pieces because the the operator would be required to
maneuver the block around the table.
• Require fix space

15. Using Band Knives
• Band knives are used when a higher standard of cutting
accuracy is required .
• Space must be left around garment parts when planning the
marker so that they can be sectioned out using a straight knife
and then cut exactly using the band knife.
• When small parts such as collars, cuffs and pockets are cut, a
template of metal or fiber board in the shape of the pattern
piece may be clamped to the section of lay on top of the
marker.
• Band knives are used more in menswear than in womenswear
and are often used to cut parts such as the large panels of
jackets and overcoats.

24. OSHIMA BAND KNIFE
