Questions about where to live and work?
The Community Finder Tool can help you!
Canada is the second largest country in the world by land area. The Canadian population of over 33
million people lives in thousands of cities and towns across the vast country. Newcomers have many
choices of where to live and work. Finding the right place may take time.

Housing costs vary greatly across Canada and depend on location (city, town or rural area) and type
of home (e.g., apartment or house). Where you choose to live will impact your occupational
prospects, job opportunities and salary.

The Working in Canada Community Finder Tool can help you choose a place to live and work based
on labour market and community characteristics.

3 questions to help you:
1)  What is your occupation?
Enter the name of your occupation. There are 520 options (NOC codes).

2)  In which language do you want to work?
Canada has two official languages – English and French.

3)  Do you want to live in a large or small community?
Select communities with different population sizes to find the best location for you.

Results can be refined by:
Occupational Demand
Select good, fair, or limited prospects to discover where your occupation is in demand.

Housing Affordability
By comparing local wages of the client’s occupation to local housing costs, communities are ordered
from most affordable to least (housing costs expressed as a % of gross income).

The Working in Canada Community Finder Tool
                                                   is coming soon to WorkinginCanada.gc.ca.
Working in Canada is part of the Going to Canada –
                                                                Immigration Portal Initiative.

Working In Canada Tool

  • 1. DRAFT – Oct 2009 Questions about where to live and work? The Community Finder Tool can help you! Canada is the second largest country in the world by land area. The Canadian population of over 33  million people lives in thousands of cities and towns across the vast country. Newcomers have many  choices of where to live and work. Finding the right place may take time.  Housing costs vary greatly across Canada and depend on location (city, town or rural area) and type  of home (e.g., apartment or house). Where you choose to live will impact your occupational  prospects, job opportunities and salary.  The Working in Canada Community Finder Tool can help you choose a place to live and work based  on labour market and community characteristics.   3 questions to help you: 1)  What is your occupation? Enter the name of your occupation. There are 520 options (NOC codes). 2)  In which language do you want to work? Canada has two official languages – English and French.  3)  Do you want to live in a large or small community? Select communities with different population sizes to find the best location for you. Results can be refined by: Occupational Demand Select good, fair, or limited prospects to discover where your occupation is in demand. Housing Affordability By comparing local wages of the client’s occupation to local housing costs, communities are ordered  from most affordable to least (housing costs expressed as a % of gross income). The Working in Canada Community Finder Tool is coming soon to WorkinginCanada.gc.ca. Working in Canada is part of the Going to Canada – Immigration Portal Initiative.  questions@WorkinginCanada.gc.ca
