However, there are several things YOU can do to increase YOUR deliverability and one of my students just reminded me that Ive been assuming everyone else knows what Ive learned over the last Case Study 10+ years of email marketing. …duh on my part. :) Bonus First, understand that ESPs (yahoo, hotmail, aol, comcast etc) are doing everything they can technically to stop or slow down blatant marketing 1000 Sign Ups messages from being sent to their customers and since its impossible for them to pay for human beings to review each and every message before 30-40% Op-tin rate they are passed through their systems; theyre forced to create "Spam 30 days Filters". Spam Filters are simply little rules they add, replace, retract, and edit all the time to attempt to automatically guess whether a message is spam or not. i.e.. "If an email has too many "!" exclamation points, dont deliver the message". There are hundreds if not thousands of these and they are different for each ESP. Stay away from adding these to your email messages: * Excessive Capital Letters (i.e. BUY MY STUFF) * Excessive Punctuation Marks (i.e. !!! or $$$) Case Study * Spam Words (i.e. free, money, guaranteed, porn, xxx, casino, Nigeria, etc) Bonus * Multiple "Click Here"s 1000 Sign Ups * Misleading Subject Lines! (this is a big one simply because you never want to use a tactic to get subscribers to read your email that will inevitably make them 30-40% Op-tin rate get mad or leave them with a bad taste in their mouth after they read the body 30 days of your message) * Too Many Colors or, more specifically, Sales Colors (red, yellow, green) Hey, seriously; the most effective thing you can do to ensure fantastic deliverability the majority of the time is to focus on keeping your subscribers happy and not feeling "taken advantage of". They ultimately have a lot of control over your continued deliverability so do your best to keep them WANTING to get your email messages.   4. 4. 2.Get Emails Read Subject Line, Subject Line, Subject Line! If you want/need more of your subscribers to go inside and actually read your emails; it all comes down to your subject lines. Case Study The subject line has two jobs. Focus on the fundamentals. Attract attention in the endless sea of subject lines in most of our email Bonus accounts. And, Create a psychological intriguing environment where your subscriber MUST click to get more information. 1000 Sign Ups Now, how do we do this 30-40% Op-tin rate Attract Attention. 30 days * Be Different (use things like "--" "[]" "-->" at the beginning of your subject lines BUT very sparingly so you dont get caught up in Spam Filters) * Be Different (pay attention to your competitors common or normal way of writing subject lines and do the opposite when possible. If most are capitalizing the first letter of every word, dont!   5. 5. Cliffhanger Subject Lines…period! A fairly simple idea, however most get this horribly wrong. A cliffhanger subject line MUST literally leave your subscriber Case Study "Hanging Off A Cliff" after they read your subject line so they have NO CHOICE but to click and get the rest of the story inside your Bonus email. So, you want to achieve two main fundamentals when writing one. 1000 Sign Ups 1. Split a thought in half (NOT A SENTENCE, ...a thought). If I were 30-40% Op-tin rate going to split "This is the best product Ive ever seen", it wouldnt 30 days be "This is the best product…", it would be "This is the best…". The difference is subtly but SUPER IMPORTANT because in the first example, your subscriber can miss-assume the first half is an entire thought and the second example cannot be taken that way; very very very big difference. 2. Add "…" at the end of the last word in your cliffhanger subject line.   6. 6. 3.Get More Clicks Psychology, once again, is the only tool we really have to encourage specific subscriber interactions and this is what Ive found to be most effective in getting more "clicks" Case Study First, you have a MUUCH better chance of getting clicks if most of your Bonus subscribers read every word in your message. So, the only way we can be assured of this is by making our messages as small as possible AND emotion filled rather than boring or technical. Heres an example; 1000 Sign Ups Lets say Im promoting a very cool Wordpress plugin that I think is perfect 30-40% Op-tin rate for my subscribers and is very very technical. lol, 30 days Get Ready to laugh at me here. I would send this in the body of the email: --- Hey John... Was absolutely stunned when I read this a minute ago: LINK Thoughts?   7. 7. Now, I know I know; thats craziness right? ...Wrong! Its very very very effective when youre literally focused on getting the most clicks possible WITHOUT pissing your subscribers off with some super obvious "ploy". You see, the only thing we truly know about our subscribers (especially when you Case Study have a list of 2000 people or more) is that theyre human beings. And, since this is the case; our best tools to encourage any action are psychological tools. We all Bonus respond much more to emotional messages than we do to "descriptions". 1000 Sign Ups Now, can you identify the other psychological tool in the example?? Final thoughts When you come up with your own psychological tools or triggers to increase subscriber actions, please remember that you MUST NOT come across as a jerk or "cut throat" at all costs.
