Girl POWER:
Empowering and nurturing Brevard’s girls with life
skills to facilitate and empower them to become
confident young women.
Presented by: Lacie Banks, Christina Born, Rebekah Stovall
Fifer, Julie Harris, Melissa Naughton, David Gillespie, and
Tara Ruch. With many thanks to Cindy Parr.
Who is the Junior League of South Brevard?
The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. is an organization of women
committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and
to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of
trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. It
believes all young women should have access to the tolls necessary for a bright
future.
Girl POWER
 To provide access to the tools necessary for a bright future through a positive impact on the lives of
girls through innovative programs focusing on self-esteem, nutrition, leadership, and mentoring.
 Girl POWER will consist of free workshops that are conducted throughout the year once the project
is launched with an introductory symposium in 2018, “Girl POWER Summit”. Then provide follow-up
mentorships with the young women that attended the symposium through April 2018.
 The project is intended to provide young women in Brevard County, ages 16-21 years old, with the
necessary life skills needed to build and maintain a healthy lifestyle, both mind and body.
 The long-term impact in the community will be to build upon the programs, focusing on more
involved workshops for “graduates” of the fundamental program; thereby following them as the
girls progress in maturity and in life; giving the young women a chance to excel and empower
themselves as they enter adulthood.
Goals & Objectives

symposium in 2018.
 Provide feedback for the future growth

Survey CommentsWhat was the most valuable thing you learned from today’s event:
 I learned exactly what healthy and unhealthy relationships are like.
 That you can do anything you set your mind to and that we have a wonderful community to support me.
 How to do interviews and how to live life.
What would you change about this event?
 Nothing, I enjoyed everything.
 I would have more hands on activities.
 More interactive – games, getting involved with others.
What topic do you wish was included in today’s event?
 Mental health issues.
 How to love and accept yourself.
 Social media like the effects social media creates.
While today’s girl POWER was a special event, would you be interested in ongoing Girl POWER sessions?
 Yes, I would like to bring more girls back from various organizations I volunteer with.
 Of course! This was very educational and I enjoyed talking to people who have through what I am going
through to get advice. I also enjoyed speaking to other kids.
 No, I liked the seminar feel, and believe it is more special like this, because if you miss one year, you will
want to go so bad the next year and tell all your friends about it so they will want to go and learn with you.
Girl POWER Video
Lessons Learned
Advertise six to eight weeks in advance next time.
Small group sessions worked well as it helped the attendees open up and
connect.
Invite parents and/or teachers/advisors to participate and perhaps plan some
sessions for them about being a support system.
Facebook and email resulted in the most RSVPs. Sponsor ads and collect email
addresses of those who may be interested.
Hold two symposiums per year covering different topics.
Reach out to other non-profits and groups such as, Hacienda Girls Ranch, Boys &
Girls Club (include mentors as well), church youth groups, etc.
Create Teen Girl Ambassadors from each school/organization to help spread the
word and encourage attendance.
