  7. 7. You must be registered for each semester (fall and spring) until the semester you graduate. See the Registrar’s website for policies on registration each semester. For Research Courses You must complete •A Registration Transaction Form (RTF, not the EZ) and •A Research Course Request Form These need to be signed by your advisor and the department chairman. Students with an MS degree must take a minimum of 30 credits, of which at least 18 must be credits from courses available for graduate credit, and at least 12 must be dissertation research credits. The courses to be taken by the student must be approved by the student's advisor. Students with a BS degree must take a minimum of 54 credits, of which at least 36 must be credits from courses available for graduate credit, and at least 12 must be dissertation research credits.   9. 9. Seminar Requirements ECE Ph.D. degree student must register for the 0 credit hour Colloquium course ECE 390. Students are to satisfy the requirements for this course by attending five Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering sponsored colloquium seminars, workshops or symposia. Graduate students are expected to complete the ECE Colloquium Attendance Form, secure a verification signature for each seminar attended, and submit the completed form to their academic advisor for endorsement. A completed and advisor endorsed colloquium form is required in the student's academic file prior to applying for graduation. All seminars and dissertation defense presentations given by the Ph.D. students will be announced as a part of the departmental seminar series. Preliminary Exam The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering requires a preliminary examination that must be taken before completing 18 credits after initial registration with a minimum GPA of 3.4 or better. The examination is guided by, but not limited to, the core material of the master's program. After passing the exam, the student may then begin their dissertation research.   11. 11. The ECE Department requires the submission of a paper to a refereed journal and its acceptance for publication prior to the completion of degree requirements. Credit must be given in the publication to the fact that the material is abstracted, summarized, or developed from a dissertation submitted to GWU in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Intro Contact Academics Forms Resources Quiz The notation of I (Incomplete) may be recorded if a student, for reasons beyond his or her control, is unable to complete the work of the course AND if the instructor approves the reason before grades must be reported. The I may be used only if the student's prior performance and class attendance in the course have been satisfactory. Failure to complete the work of a course that is not satisfactorily explained to the instructor before the date when grades must be turned in will be graded F. To Request an Incomplete, You Must 1. Intro Contact Academics Forms Resources Quiz The I may remain on the record for a maximum of one year, but the instructor should set a shorter period when the uncompleted work must be made up. An incomplete that is not removed within one calendar year or at the time of graduation of the student (whichever occurs first) is automatically changed to an IF. The I cannot be removed by the student’s reregistering for the course here or taking its equivalent elsewhere. When the I is changed to a letter grade, the I followed by the letter grade (e.g., IB) will appear on the student’s record. Academic Policies: Incompletes
