‘Critique is part of culture.’ Discuss the above statement by analysing a piece of art, music,
literature of your own choosing. Use one or more concepts covered in the second section of
the course example Dystopia, Trickster Tales and Carnival Word Count: 1,500 words
approx. (N.B. If unsure about your choice, don’t hesitate to ask. It can be a painting,
sculpture, song, opera, album, track, genre, poem, novel, short-story, drama, film or
something else entirely. This is not an exhaustive list.) Advice: Choose something that you
have a strong response to, whether positive or negative. Choose something contemporary –
within the last century at least – although older choices are permitted. Analyse and
interpret the piece in some detail. Give some account of the social context in which the piece
was created. Read about your chosen concept(s) in depth. Cite from key texts describing
these concepts. Answer the question: Not just “what does it critique”?, but what does it tell
us about critique in society. Don’t worry too much about secondary reading: This can help,
but it is sufficient to just refer to the materials on canvas and your chosen piece of art.
