3. Spring forward Sunday March 13th
Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of
Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the
best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward
in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving
Time has been in use throughout much of the United States,
Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President
Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time
begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October
each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by
passing a State law.
Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona
(although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many
years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the
exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes
Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time
zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the
Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time
Zone.
And if it seems like Daylight Saving Time starts early every year, you're right
-- sort of. Beginning in 1986, Daylight Saving Time started on the first
Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October. But in 2007,
Congress revised the dates to the current March-November calendar in
order to extend the energy savings gleaned from earlier rising. Since the
1970s, energy conservation has been the primary reason for the summer
time change -- longer day means we turn on the lights later, saving energy.

6. Patrick’
St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick's Day is a religious holiday celebrated internationally on the
17th of March. It is named after Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most
commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It originated as a
Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 17th
century. It has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Irish
culture.
Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was
blue. Over the years the color green and its association
with Saint Patrick's day grew. Green ribbons and
shamrocks were born in celebration of St Patrick's
Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have
used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain
the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing
and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired
designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the
day. In the 1798 rebellion, in hopes of making a
political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green
uniforms on the 17th of March in hopes of catching public attention. The
phrase "the wearing of the green", meaning to wear a shamrock on one's
clothing, derives from a song of the same name.
The first Saint Patrick's Festival was held on March 17, 1996. In 1997, it
became a three-day event, and by 2000 it was a four-day event. By
2006, the festival was five days long; more than 675,000 people
attended the 2009 parade. Overall 2009's five day festival saw close to 1
million visitors, who took part in festivities that included concerts, outdoor
theatre performances, and fireworks.
7. The Optimist Creed
Promise Yourself -
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the
presence of trouble.
