Dolphins

  1. By: Lauryn, Kennedy, Kylie
  2. Dolphins are mammals because the babies drink their moms milk. They are also mammals because they breathe air in and out of a blow hole on the top of their head. Dolphins are carnivores because they eat meat such as fish and squid. Dolphins use camouflage to protect themselves from predators. Dolphins also have to get used to the other animals that live around them. They are made with flippers and fins so they can swim. They do not live in a neighborhood because they don’t have salt water in ponds. They also don’t live in ponds because it would be too shallow for dolphins to swim around.
  3. Dolphins live in oceans and there is a lot of sea weed. It is full of sand all over the place. The ocean is usually very cold as the temperature is about 39 degrees Fahrenheit or 2 degrees Celsius. There are many other fish that live in the ocean with the dolphins. The ocean is very deep.
  4. Dolphins are killed for there blubber which is fat. They are also caught for their oil. Fishermen also kill dolphins when they are fishing. What is being done to help them? People are putting dolphins in protective places such as Sea World and wildlife centers. You can also use symbolic adoption to help save real animals. You can get a defender’s membership and that also saves real animals.
  5. Because the forty species of dolphins are so diverse, they range in size. Five species of dolphins live in the world’s rivers. Scientists believe that dolphins conserve energy by swimming alongside ships. Usually a dolphin has 1 calf, twins are rare. They are mostly gray with a darker back than the rest of its body. It is difficult to estimate the population numbers since there are so many different species. The Bottlenose dolphin can live over 40 years, and the Orca can live to be 70 or 80 years old!!!! To prevent drowning while sleeping only half of a dolphins brain stays awake while the other half goes to sleep to keep breathing. They are highly intelligent. The smallest of the dolphins species is the Maui dolphin. Most dolphins live long lives. Mating season is throughout the year.
