Your departmental felony task force was attempting to serve a warrant on Jamar (alleging
that he was involved in a drug-related homicide 2 months earlier). Jamar barricaded himself
inside the house and refused to come out, saying that he had enough food, drink, and
ammunition to last for weeks. You are the lead negotiator for your department and have
gotten nowhere over the last three days of talking with Jamar – his position has not
changed. SWAT is getting antsy and the chief wants a status report. At what point (what are
the indicators) would you recommend that SWAT break into the home and take Jamar by
force? Would your decision to have SWAT break in and take Jamar by force change if he had
his wife and baby daughter in the house also and was holding them as hostages?
