Students will submit an 800-1000 word review of one of the NIOSH Line of Duty Death
(LODD) reports provided in the Week 1 section of class. Do you agree with the investigator’s
conclusions and recommendations? Why or why not?ou must use at least two references
not used by the investigators to defend your opinions. The NFFF text assignment addresses
training safety, medical and fitness standards, and technology. These are all important, but I
want to talk about training safety. When working through training evolutions it can be easy
to relax because the group is just “practicing.” This could not be farther from the truth.
Every year firefighters are killed or seriously injured practicing for the real thing. This is the
reason NFPA 1403, Standard for Live Fire Training Evolutions was developed. Training
exercises are not the time to relax safety expectations. Just the opposite is true: that is the
time to be very strict. This practice will make safety as important to the evolution as the
skills being practiced. And just as the skills, safety will become second nature when on
scene. This week you have a paper due where you review a NIOSH investigation of a
firefighter fatality. As I’m sure you now understand, there is a lot that goes into a
comprehensive investigation. As difficult as it can be, if your department suffers a line of
duty death (LODD) or a near-miss, you must perform your own investigation. I say this for a
number of reasons. First, it will give your organization the chance to take an objective look
at how things are done and how well they comply with department policy. Secondly, it will
tell the story from a local perspective. Outside investigators may focus on remedies that
aren’t realistic locally. Finally, it will give the department members some closure.
