First aid is any help given to a casualty before any
professional help arrives
The aims of First Aid are to:
1) Preserve life
2) Prevent the casualty’s condition from worsening
3) Promote recovery
4) Prepare to send the casualty for further
treatment

Sprains
• Caused by falling, twisting or
getting hit
Strains
• Caused by a sudden awkward
movement, lifting heavy
objects the wrong way
• Weak, tired, overused or tight
muscles and insufficient warm-
up can also lead to a strain.

Sprains - Cause ligaments around
the joint to stretch or tear
Strains - Muscle fibres are torn,
either partially or completely
8. Bandaging a Sprain You will need:
A Crepe Bandage
1. Begin the wrapping at the
base of the foot. Wrap a few
rounds around the balls of
the feet. Ensure that
wrapping is not too tight or
too loose.
2. Make a figure 8 around the
ankle with the crepe
bandage.
3. Repeat the figure 8 around
the ankle 3 times.
4. Secure the bandage with
metal hooks provided.
Bandage should not be too tight (will restrict blood circulation) or too loose (will not provide enough support).
