What is PDCA Cycle ?
PDCA (plan–do–check–act or plan–do–check–adjust) an iterative four-step management method
used in business for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products.
It is also known as the Deming circle/cycle/wheel, Shewhart cycle, control circle/cycle, or plan–
do–study–act (PDSA)
PDCA was made popular by Dr W. Edwards Deming, who is considered by many to be the father of
modern quality.

TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT
PDCA & TQM
The basic need of TQM is continuous
improvement of PDCA.
For this continuous improvement
purpose PDCA cycle acts as a best
tool, so as to achieve the quality.
PDCA TQM
PROCESS TO OBTAIN TQM BY PDCA
Select the project in which TQM to be achieved
Grasp the present status
Analyze the cause
Determine the corrective action
Implement corrective action
Checking the effects in terms of quality
Take appropriate action
Conclude and future plans to obtain TQM
PLAN
• Establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in
accordance with the expected output (the target or goals). By
establishing output expectations, the completeness and accuracy of
the spec is also a part of the targeted improvement. When possible
start on a small scale to test possible effects.
DO
• Implement the plan, execute the process, make the product. Collect
data for charting and analysis in the following "CHECK" and "ACT"
steps.
CHECK
• Check the Effect of corrective action
• Compare over all results
• Analyse failure to achieve results
• Results achieved
CHECK
ACT
• Check appropriate action
• Documentation, standardisation and control
• Training
• Decide on future plans
• The well known seven quality control tools may be used in this process
Continuous quality improvement with PDCA
 Deming continually emphasized iterating towards an
improved system, hence PDCA should be repeatedly
implemented in spirals of increasing knowledge of the
system that converge on the ultimate goal, each cycle
closer than the previous

• Purpose:- To INVESTIGATE the current
situation & understand fully the nature of the
problem being solved.
Purpose:- To Enlighten the Team as to the Real
Problem by analysing the Data and defining and
implementing a solution plan.
• Purpose:- To monitor effect of
implementation of project plan & find
Counter measures to further improve the
solution.
Purpose:- To Review Continuously the
Performance Measure & make adjustments
as required. Integrate new situation into
Normal Working Practice. Start PDCA Cycle
again.
CONCLUSION
• PDCA is a powerful tool to obtain TOTAL
QUALITY MANAGEMENT in any sector not only
in Textile.
