COHESIVE STRUCTURE
AND DESIGN FOR
ONLINE COURSES
reTHINK Provost Challenge
Course Information Module

Each Course
should
contain a
module that
goes over
the needed
information
to succeed
in the
course.

Create this
module as if
it were a
lesson and
present the
objectives.
Introduce Students to Online
Learning
Ensure
students
know what
technology
they will
require.
Instructor Introduction

Let the
students
know who
you are and
that you will
be present
with them in
their online
classroom.
Syllabus

Have a well
laid out and
designed
course
syllabus will
engage
students to
read.
Schedule

Link all
possible
assignments
, readings,
videos, etc.
on your
course
schedule.
This will
engage
them to take
a peek as to
what is in
store for
them.
Quiz on Course Information

Minimize the
number of
students
who email
you with
questions
that are on
the online
learning
introduction,
syllabus,
and
schedule.
Give them a
Quiz!
Summarize

Summarize
what the
students
should now
be able to do
after module
completion.

This lets
them know
what they
need to
understand
before
progressing.
Core Content
Weekly Modules
Weekly Objectives

Provide an
outline of
what the
students
must
accomplish
during the
week.
Lecture

Not only
provide an
overview of
the material,
but provide a
recorded
lecture
presentation
as well.

Here, lecture
outlines are
provided for
those
students
wanting to
take notes on
the lectures.
Provide a variety of activities

Quizzes,
Essays,
Discussion
all provide
methods for
engaging
your
students in
the weekly
material.
Integrating in D2L

There are
many
possibilities
for
instructors to
engage their
students
online
through
integration of
eTextbooks,
assignment
variety, and
publisher
learning
environment
s.
Embed articles with Course
Template
This will add
to the
cohesive
nature of
Online
Classroom
and keep
student in-
class rather
than being
redirected to
different
websites.
Conclusion
 The attention span of students is short.
 They are used to well-designed, organized,
graphic rich, and video rich content.
 Our online classrooms need to mimic this to
reduce boredom and disinterest in the
    material.
 Creation of a Virtual PSU via our LMS will take
    creativity.
 Need course development tools that leads the
way for the future of online learning.
