3. 2010: Saskatchewan Oral
Health Coalition (SOHC)
• May, 2010 saw the formation of the SOHC. It
consists of health professionals, including oral
health professionals, community agencies, health
region programs, provincial agencies, First
Nations communities, and individuals and
groups whose goal is to improve the oral health
of Saskatchewan residents.
• 2011 – SOHC members identified Oral Health
Care in LTC as the top priority to move
forward with.

Saskatchewan
Since 2011, the Saskatchewan Oral Health
Professions (SOHP) and Saskatchewan Oral Health
Coalition have collaborated to develop a model for
oral health care in LTC:
• conducted best practice literature review
• developed policies and procedures
• continued data collection
• informed and include other health regions and
providers.

Professions (SOHP) and Saskatchewan Oral
Health Coalition (SOHC) endorsed the use
and adaptation of the Australian Better Oral
Health in Residential Care

program was focus tested in Saskatoon
Health Region at Parkridge Centre, in two of
their neighborhoods, in early 2014.

Standards for Saskatchewan is a train-the-trainer
model teaching the best practices to provide daily
oral care.
• The Parkridge Centre pilot was used as the
model for full implementation in other LTC
homes in Saskatoon Health Region.

16. Oct 2015 saw the transition from the pilot project as the Saskatoon
Health Region OHP hired a dental assistant into the LTC OH
Coordinator position.
LTC OHC has audited/refreshed staff at Parkridge and
implemented Better Oral Health in Long Term Care: Best Practice
Standards for Saskatchewan at Sherbrooke, Sunnyside home, and just
started at Luther care home training times.
Saskatoon Health Region LTC Advisory Committee has the
reviewed Better Oral Health in LTC strategy and is supportive.
2 contract dental hygienists with Saskatoon Health Region will work
with LTC and within acute care to implement.

Rapids Health Centre, and provided oral health supplies.
28. DHE provides Oral Health Module for Continuing Care
Aides training in Community College.
29. Contract dental therapist/hygienist providing dental
treatment assessments at Providence Place.
DHE provides annual assessments at Grasslands Health
Centre in Rockglen. DHE would like to begin the Better
Oral Health in LTC Program there.
Referrals from Prairie Villa and Ross Payant Centennial
Home in Assiniboia, Lafleche, and Gravelbourg.
Better Oral Health in LTC will be implemented in
neighborhoods at Extendicare.
30. The SHR LTC Oral Health Coordinator has
trained/orientated a dental hygienist to implement the
Better Oral Health in Long Term Care program for
Heartland Health Region and Priairie North Health
Region.
DHE provides Oral Health Module to Special Care Aides
taking course at community college.
32. Contract hygienist (Unity) has been trained and will be
implementing Better Oral Health in LTC.
In the past, DHE & SLP implemented training for LTC
staff in several LTC homes, to provide assessments and
daily oral care. Due to staff changes, this has changed.
33. DHE provides Oral Health Module for Continuing Care Aides @
Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Prince Albert.

Kamsack has expressed interest in implementing Better
Oral Health in LTC: Best Practice Standards for
Saskatchewan.
