resident’s quality of life in many ways:
• bad breath
• bleeding gums, tooth decay and tooth loss
• appearance, self-esteem and social
interactions
• speech and swallowing
• ability to eat, nutritional status and weight
loss
• pain and discomfort
• change in behaviour.

presented to the Ministry of
Health, Continuing Care
Branch.

•Saskatchewan Oral Health
Professions (SOHP) & the
Saskatchewan Oral Health
Coalition (SOHC) worked
collaboratively to adapt resource
for Saskatchewan.

There are 3 levels of education and
training:
1. Professional – the Trainer
In health regions, this can be dental public
health staff.
2. Educators
Educators are trained by professional to train
others.
3. Staff
Front-line staff who will provide daily care.

Better Oral Health in Long Term Care –
•Requires a multidisciplinary team
approach to maintain a residents’
oral health care.

Better Oral Health in Long Term Care –
• The oral health care team (OHCT) may include two or
more of:
• Oral Health Coordinator (OHC): in Regina & Saskatoon,
this is a Dental Assistant.
• Oral Health Professional (dentist, dental hygienist,
dental therapist, dental assistant, denturist)
• Nurses
• Special Care Aides
• Physicians
• Other health professionals: speech-language
pathologists

•The OHCT is responsible for 4
key areas.
1. Oral Health Assessment
2. Oral Health Care Plan
3. Daily Oral Hygiene
4. Referrals

1. Oral Health Assessment
• Performed by licensed oral health
professional (or health professional who
has been trained to perform oral
assessments) on admission.
• Performed on a regular basis or as need
arises, by oral health coordinator, oral
health professional, or nurse, whoever is
trained.

2. Oral Health Care Plan
• Daily care plan is developed based on
basic individualized preventive oral health
care regimen.

3. Daily Oral Hygiene
• Continuing Care Aides provide daily oral
care to residents, based on their
individualized Oral Health Care Plan.

4. Referrals
• Referrals for comprehensive dental exams
and treatment are made, based on the
Oral Health Assessment Tool. The majority
of residents are best treated in their LTC
home.

Role:
• Dental Assistants
• Currently working in:
• Regina at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home
• Saskatoon at Parkridge Centre, Sherbrooke
Community Centre, and Sunnyside
Adventist Care Centre.

LTC - Oral Health Coordinator Role:
• Trains staff to provide daily care.
• Provide health education and promotion.
• Communicates/liaison with family.
• Coordinates/liaison with LTC staff to
expedite effective care.
• Coordinates consent/medical history
process as required.

6 Best Ways to Maintain a Healthy
Mouth:

Saskatoon Health Region
• Parkridge Centre, Sherbrooke Community
Centre, and Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre
have adopted Better Oral Health in Long Term
Care – Best Practice Standards for Saskatchewan.
• Nurse Educators received professional training
by dental health educators and/or LTC Oral
Health Coordinator:
• one 3 hour learning module.
• one 3 hour hands-on session.

Expansion:
• LTC Oral Health Coordinator in Saskatoon
Health Region will continue to expand
Better Oral Health in Long Term Care
training to other interested LTC homes.
• Training modules and resources, including
all forms, policies, and standard work, are
available on Saskatoon Health Region
Infonet.
Care

Expansion:
• All dental public health staff orientated to
Better Oral Health in Long Term Care in
June 2015.
