9. PLOT
• Andy Dufresne – an innocent person is sent to Shawshank
Prison.
•The ugly realities of a prison are soon introduced to Andy.
•Andy becomes friends with prison 'fixer' Red
•Andy uses his banking skills to impress and be closer with the
guards and the warden.
• A new young inmate in the prison came who could have been a
proof of Andy’s innocence - killed by the warden as warden.
10. • After some years of passiveness, one day, Andy was found
missing in his cell.
• The Warden and the other inmates including Red were
astonished to find out that Andy used the rock hammer and
polishing cloths every night for nearly twenty years to carve
through the wall.
• After some years Red was also released from the prison but after
coming out, he feels “institutionalized
• The film ends with a beautiful description of the word “HOPE”.
Contd…
11.
12. • Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne.
• Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, Andy's best friend and the
film's narrator; convict responsible for smuggling things inside the prison for
the inmates.
• Bob Guton as Warden Samuel Norton. He is well versed in the Bible and
presents himself as a pious, devout Christian and reform-minded
administrator, while his actions reveal him to be corrupt, ruthless, and
remorseless.
• William Sadler as Heywood, a member of Red's gang of long-serving convicts.
• Clancy Brown as Capt. Byron Hadley, chief of the guards.
• Gill Bellows as Tommy Williams, a young convict whose experiences in a
previous prison hold the truth about Andy's innocence.
• Mark Rolston as Bogs Diamond, the head of "The Sisters" gang and a prison
rapist.
• James Whitmore as Brooks Hatlen. Convicted prison librarian/trustee and one
of the oldest convicts at Shawshank, having been in prison since 1905.
CHARACTERS
13. • Shot inside USA
Mansfield Reformatory as The Shawshank state prison
• Beautifully composed sound tracks
• Oscars nomination for the category best sound and best
cinematography.
PRESENTATION
14. • Connecting with the audience.
• Nice film based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita
Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption”
• The scene where all the inmates are shown without any
clothes does absolutely nothing to support the film.
• Guards never happen to touch the Rita Hayworth poster.
• Critics argue that the role of Andy could have been
better performed by actors like Leo Dicaprio or Jhonny
Depp.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS
15.
16. • The beautifully written novella has been magically
converted into a movie that succeeds to touch
everyone’s heart.
• A good movie for someone who enjoys the
smoothly flowing excellent script and beautifully
written dialogues.
CONCLUSION
17. • The only aspect in the movie where we can
imagine any improvements being made is the
part where the inmates were shown without
clothes.
• As the part doesn’t contribute to the betterment
of the film whatsoever, removing that scene
would make the film more appropriate for all
age groups.
• The role of Andy Dufrense is more suited for
actors like Jhonny Depp or Leo Dicaprio.
