Even sky is no longer the limit,Mobile communication has changed the way we live our life, and it is still changing it in a very surprising way. It’s like a big wave come upon us and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. 10 years ago we struggled to have an access, now we are overwhelmed with the amount of possibilities to access something.Today we can get everything we can think of. Tomorrow.. Maybe we can get everything we never think of.. Imagine the possibilities.
Don’t think mobile technology as a mobile phone only.Even today, with the rise of smart phone and tablet, should we still call it a mobile phone?Like a Delorean Car used by Michael j Fox in the franchises of Back To The Future:Is it a car? Because it has four wheels? Is it a plane? Because it can fly?Or is it a time machine? Because it could travel over times, backward and forward…??Question is, what is Mobile technology (note just mobile phone) to us yesterday, today and tomorrow?
Aristotle said Man is by nature a social animalOur lives depend on other humans. Human infants are born unable to transport or care for themselves. Their survival depends on another human's efforts. We develop and learn about the world around us through the filter of other people. Our connections to others are key to not only our survival, but also to our happiness and the success of our careersThis is why, from the early days of telephony we were dreaming about “always connected with others, anytime, anywhere”
In early days, mobile communication is an impossible dreamEvery communication devices is stationed.
Every great thing is started as a dream.Mobile phone is one of the thing. In 1926 the German artist Karl Arnold created a visionary cartoon about the use of mobile phones in the street, in the picture „wireless telephony“, published in the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus.Mobile communication is dreamt as a phone we could carry anywhere (not dependent on cable)
The first handheld mobile phoneMotorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone. On 3 April 1973 Martin Cooper, a Motorola engineer and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment in front of reporters, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. The prototype handheld phone used by Dr. Martin Cooper weighed 1.1 kg and measured 23 cm long, 13 cm deep and 4.45 cm wide. The prototype offered a talk time of just 30 minutes and took 10 hours to re-charge. Cooper has stated his vision for the handheld device was inspired by Captain James T. Kirk using his Communicator on the television show Star Trek
The 1st SMS MessageThe first text message was sent in 1992 from Neil Papworth, a former developer at Sema Group Telecoms. Mobile phones didn't have keyboards at the time, so Papworth had to type the message on a PC. Papworth's text — "Merry Christmas" — was successfully sent to Richard Jarvis at Vodafone. Jarvis couldn't say "Merry Christmas" back, because his brick-sized Orbitel 901 phone had no way of inputting text.
THE FIRST web-enabled mobile phone in the world. AT&T PocketNet Phone is actually a prototype phone, it was never shipped to the general market. It was designed in collaboration with AT&T and Unwired Planet, who invented the mobile web with a simple text markup language and browser for low-end mobile IP devices
The 1st QWERTY PhoneIn 1997 The Nokia 9000i Communicator becomes the first phone to come equipped with a keyboard. Future BlackBerry fans rejoice.
The first BlackBerry device, the 850, was introduced in 1999 as a two-way pager in Munich, Germany. The name BlackBerry was coined by the marketing company Lexicon Branding. The name was chosen due to the resemblance of the keyboard's buttons to that of the drupelets that compose the blackberry fruit.
Development of what was to become the iPhone began in 2004, when Apple started to gather a team of 1000 employees to work on the highly confidential "Project Purple"Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone to the public on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld 2007 convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The two initial models, a 4 GB model priced at US$ 499 and an 8 GB model at US$ 599, went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, at 6:00 pm local time, while hundreds of customers lined up outside the stores nationwide. The passionate reaction to the launch of the iPhone resulted in sections of the media dubbing it the 'Jesus phone'.Before the release of the iPhone, handset manufacturers such as Nokia and Motorola were enjoying record sales of cell phones based more on fashion and brand rather than technological innovation. The smartphone market, dominated at the time by BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile devices, was a "staid, corporate-led smartphone paradigm" focused on enterprise needs. However with its capacitive touchscreen and consumer-friendly design, the iPhone fundamentally changed the mobile industry, with Steve Jobs proclaiming in 2007 that "the phone was not just a communication tool but a way of life”. The dominant mobile operating systems at the time such as Symbian, BlackBerry OS, and Windows Mobile were not designed to handle additional tasks beyond communication and basic functions.iPhone OS (renamed iOS in 2010) was designed as a robust OS with capabilities such as multitasking and graphics in order to meet future consumer demands. These operating systems never focused on applications and developers, and due to infighting among manufacturers as well as the complex bureaucracy and bloatness of the OS, they never developed a thriving ecosystem like Apple's App Store or Android's Google Play. Rival manufacturers have been forced to spend more on software and development costs in order to catch up to the iPhone. The iPhone's success has led to a decline in sales of high-end fashion phones and business-oriented smartphones such as Vertu and BlackBerry, respectively
In previous time, we are very depended to the manufacturer. Now we can “customize” our mobile device with any apps we want: utilities, games, players, social media, etc. It’s no longer just a mobile phone. It’s who we are.Anything we can dream is actually we can create now.
And make our life easier. With a smartphone in the majority of pockets, it's hard to imagine what life would be like without them — but chip maker Qualcomm has dramatized it.Life without smartphones? Are you crazy? What kind of world would that be?How would we update Twitter or listen to music or check our email on the bus? What about the all-important Angry Birds? If you've ever wondered how we could possibly manage, you're right to worry. Chip maker Qualcomm has figured it out, and the world looks like it would be a very rough, dangerous place to live, indeed. The company has put together a short promotional video detailing the perils of life without smartphones, and it looks like it would involve a lot of bruises.
Mobile technology is simply a new medium, not the extension of mobile phone. With the competition between platform manufacturers (especially iOS and Android), the benefits that consumer will get from their mobile devices are getting more and more advanced in the future
How big it affects our life? Let’s see what is happening.
Many people that previously has no access to the internet from PC, now is suddenly able to access internet through their mobile device
And when they access internet through their mobile, they become fast learner and adapter actively. They join communities, create new environment, and interact with new people they never met.
We now have more choices to customize our mobile device with apps that suitable for our needs.Apple Apps Store hit 1 million apps in Dec 2013On average there are 25.000 – 30.000 apps added every monthGames is the leading category with 18% of total apps, followed by other top apps such as education 11%, entertainment 8%, lifestyle 8%, business 7,7%, and books 5.6%60% of the apps are free, but they can cost 1000$Android’s Google Play has about the same percentage Obviously we cannot download all of those apps.¼ of those apps only used once1/5 of all FREE Android apps currently available have been downloaded less than 100 times½ of all FREE Android apps have been downloaded less than 1000 times
Walt Disney once said “if you can dream it, you can do it” this is the era when that saying goes into life, virtual life at least.
This is the most important thing that make people love about their smartphone. It enable them to do thing they thought they cannot do, it makes them live an easier lifeThis video was presented at Apple WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) 2012, the first stage for Tim Cook, CEO of apple, to give presentation in front of hundreds of apps developer after Steve Jobs passed away.
Life with mobile technology is life in a faster lane.We have higher expectation from our mobile device. Some research shows that:90% of text message is read within 3 minutes of being delivered30% of web users expect a website to load in their phone in 3 second or less75% are only willing to wait 5 seconds or less for a website to load before leaving itWe are becoming more demanding when it comes to mobile technology
We want more technologies implanted in our phone, but in contrary we want a lighter, smaller, thinner phone. One jokingly said that all the smartphone manufacturers will put in all the technologies in the phone they will forget to put “the phone” in it!(the picture shows the evolution of pixels of phone display)

We already have the technology that will allow us to create anything. However this technology still have limitation, what is that limitation?
Currently we are still very dependent on our mobile device. We still have to carry them around and recharge it.In the future this single device is our limitation. The true mobile technology should be able to give us total freedom.
Like STAR TREK inspired Motorola to create the first Dynatac in 1973 , JARVIS, the super computer from Iron Man movie might also inspire the next generation of borderless mobile technology. And you know what? We are already in the beginning of that era.
