Background of the Study
• Over the last few decades, information technology has evolved massively and
has shaped every aspect of our lives. This revaluation is considered as both a
blessing and a vice for the family as it is a strong pillar of modern society
(Saleh & Mukhtar, 2015). Social media platforms are widely utilized to
develop intellectual connections, public awareness, social movements, and
outreaches, as well as the sharing of political and cultural ideas and corporate
engagements, among other things.
• The increasing penetration of mobile gadgets and internet services across the
globe and the advent of social media i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp,
Snapchat has truly transformed the world into a global village; this leads to
the development of electronic-based forums, enhancement of new
acquaintance, facilitates reconnection with lost and past friends making
communication among individuals from around the world easier than ever
(Clyton, 2014).

Background of the Study
Cont…
• The increasing use of social media among youth limits face-to-face
interactions among partners, social cohesion and loss of privacy.
• According to Singh (2012), divorce has been more prevalent in recent years
on television, radio and the internet, and now, has a normalizing influence. When
families fail to resolve disputes between partners, the media seems to believe that
the next step is to go to a divorce court.
• This study seeks to assess the influence of social media on the rate of divorce
among young couples in Ghana.
4. Problem Statement
• The family plays a significant role in shaping members' mental and physical
health in relation to one another (D'Onofrio and Emery, 2019). A society cannot
claim to be healthy if it does not have healthy and balanced families. Families in
which a couple respects each other and is content with their lives perform better in
their individual functions (Parvandi et al., 2016). Marital conflict can arise in
diverse forms and is known to often precede divorce among families (O’Hara et al.
2012).
5. Problem Statement
• In spite of the high level of divorce cases reported in Ghana, mostly through the
court, not much is known about the reasons leading to the termination of legally
contracted marriages. The development of any useful intervention to address this
social problem depends on understanding the root cause of it in modern times as
social media intervenes in the lives of every family.
• The current state of social media necessitates an investigation into the impact of
social media usage among young couples on their decisions to divorce, which is
what this study seeks to do.
