In this talk we will go through using Microsoft Azure serverless and container technologies to automate a recurring process and reduce costs. In my work I was required to create a system which repetitively performed actions against web pages. I used selenium with the page object model as the model to interact with the pages, the code was executed using an Azure function which instantiated a browser in an Azure container Instance using a standard docker container. A transient container was used to avoid having to have one permanently installed on a VM, the container could be created only for the time it was needed. As serverless and Azure container instances have a usage charging model the costs were negligible compared to running a dedicated VM for the operation. In this talk I will talk briefly about: * Selenium and Page Object Model - how it aids re-usability of selenium code * Azure Functions - the developer experience * Azure container Instances - what they are and how setup and removal can be automated But mostly how the above fits together to make a great developer experience and deliver a solution at minimal cost. Demo: * Show Selenium webdriver working * Show how deployment process works * Show how the function looks on azure portal

There are two goals when it comes to performance: faster pages and pages that work fast. Performant applications met both goals, pages get to the user fast but also scroll and update responsively. We will go over the not so obvious performance problems we had in those areas the past year and the solutions (or coding practices) that helped us solve the issues.

Angular.js is a popular client side javascript framework. Marcello will demonstrate how to use Angular.js to work with Cascade to build a fast onepage website. Angular.js can also replace some xsl and velocity code when building websites. Content that comes from Cascade can be published as json or xml which is then used by Angular services to generate page content, dynamic navigation and more.

The best reason for writing tests is to automate your testing. Without tests, you'll likely be testing manually. This manual testing will take longer and longer as your codebase grows. In this session, you’ll learn how to test an Angular 2 application. You'll learn how to use Jasmine to unit test components and Protractor for integration testing. We’ll also take a look at code coverage options and explore continuous integration tools.

JavaScript MVC Frameworks are all the rage these days. They’ve taken the web development world by storm. This session explores the various features of the three hottest JavaScript MVC frameworks: AngularJS, Ember.js and React.js. It also compares client-side templating vs. server-side templating and how well each framework supports Isomorphic JavaScript (code that can run both client-side and server-side). Finally, it ranks each framework on 10 different criteria using Yevgeniy Brikman’s framework scorecard. Video on InfoQ: https://www.infoq.com/presentations/comparing-angular-ember-react

Yeoman is a proven scaffolding tool for webapps that has been around since 2012 and now sports more than 6000 stars on GitHub. Even though its original focus used to be on supporting front-end development, it now features a considerable number of Node.js-related generators worth exploring. This talk will give a quick overview on the topic of scaffolding, explain what Yeoman is all about and show you how to make the best use of it.

One mistake many people make is running their selenium test suites with every browser combination... you don't need to! Rendering problems are probably the biggest cross browser compatibility issue, and you can't actually test for these with Functional Tests. So by running Selenium tests across many browsers you are really testing JavaScript and DOM compatibility. Running our Selenium tests across many browsers was our JavaScript compatibility strategy, but it proved inefficient as we ended up with bugs in Internet Explorer; how embarrassing!

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Delivered by Sreenath Gopalakrishna, Director of Software Engineering at BT, and Dr Jim Webber, Chief Scientist at Neo4j, at Gartner Data & Analytics Summit London 2024 this presentation examines how knowledge graphs and GenAI combine in real-world solutions. BT Group has used the Neo4j Graph Database to enable impressive digital transformation programs over the last 6 years. By re-imagining their operational support systems to adopt self-serve and data lead principles they have substantially reduced the number of applications and complexity of their operations. The result has been a substantial reduction in risk and costs while improving time to value, innovation, and process automation. Future innovation plans include the exploration of uses of EKG + Generative AI.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.

Are you wondering why everyone is talking about the Flutterwave scandal? You’re not alone! It’s been in the news a lot. We’re going to tell you all about the Flutterwave Scandal in a way that’s easy to get. Keep reading, because we’re going to share the whole story with you. The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Market Impact The scandal shook the entire fintech market. Flutterwave’s competitors saw this as an opportunity and started to attract customers who were leaving Flutterwave.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
