There are five Uniquely Caffeinated Cafes around the UConn campus. The food containers, wrap containers, iced coffee cups, sandwich containers, parfait cups, coffee clutches, salad containers and plastic bottles used at these cafes can all be recycled. Dual-flush toilets, low-flow showers and high-efficiency washing machines have been installed into buildings around campus. The installations have been done in accordance with UConn’s Sustainable Design and Construction Policy. UConn is partnering with UTC Power to create a fuel cell power plant, PureCell, that will supply energy, heat and cooling to the buildings on the Depot campus beginning in the spring of 2012. The fuel cell technology will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing clean, efficient and reliable energy, of which the only byproducts are heat and water. It is estimated that the fuel cell will result in a net reduction of about 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. photo courtesy of UCONN Today
