1. How to make company specific resume? Is elevator pitch for a resume necessary? Ans. Depending on which broad category the company falls into - IT services/FMCGs/consulting, etc. highlight your skill sets. For instance, if you are planning to apply to a consulting company, your people's skills, leadership skills (if you have been part of an organising committee, or introduced/devised something new during college fest, etc.) should be highlighted. If you are applying to an IT services company, highlight your programming skills. Some of the guys have a lot of extracurricular activities while some have a lot of internships. So it is obvious that there resumes will be awesome in one or the other way. But my doubt is that how to make resumes of those guys attractive, who have either low no. of extracurricular activities or low no. of internships. What should be the various ideas that should be presented in the resumes to make it attractive? Ans. It is difficult to make a resume attractive without neither a good CPI, nor extarcurriculars or internships. If you did deep enough you will find that you are good at something. Highlight that. 4. 1.) what things we should include and what should be excluded ? Ans. Very generic question. Skills that are relevant to the companies you are applying to. Do not clutter the resume with every little activity you have been involved in, instead talk about things that you consider important and things that have a potential to have an impact. 2.) what makes our resume effective? In tech resumes highlight internship, project work, and course work. 4.) what is the way to arrange the things in resume and what matter we should include in particular column like extracurricular activities if we are having very limited space? Ans. Depending on whether it is a tech or a non-tech resume you can choose to cut down on or highlight the extracurricular section. Do not ignore extracurriculars especially if you are applying to a noncore industry. 5. What is the difference between nontechnical resume and technical resume? Ans. This nomenclature is an IIT specific nomenclature. Technical resumes target core industries while non-technical resumes target non-core industries. In the former research work, projects, internships, get precedence while in the latter internships, people's skills, team participation, ability to organise, lead, etc. get precedence. Do companies always measure brightness in terms of CPI ? Ans. Unfortunately many do, but you can overcome this weakness by highlighting activities you are good at. If you have led a team of people to winning a competition, you should talk about that. If you have good negotiating skills, e.g. if you have been able to rope in sponsorships for an event; convince a professor into starting a new project, etc. highlight them. 10. The prospects of getting selected in sector in which we are not pursuing our Research/Project? Ans. A profile summary with your experiences where you use two to three bullets can capture your technical knowledge effectively. 15.Are non academic activities too crucial? Ans. Yes. They can be effectively used to highlight your leadership and people, skills. 16. Does the long CV (More than 2 pages) really makes any difference? Ans. Not unless you are targeting an R&D industry where you need to mention your dissertations at length. 17. If it is R&D or teaching , then as many as possible. If it is other roles, then only the relevant ones to the job. 21. What changes or addition in resume should be there if you are applying in a non core company? Ans. The workshop had a section on non-core. Highlight leadership roles, activities in which you were a team player, successful negotiator, etc. 22. What exactly we should project in resumes... technical skills or interpersonal skills? Ans. Both, but depending on the companies you are applying to assign more importance to technical and interpersonal skills. Some keywords that make resume attractive? I think you meant interviewer. Yes, they do. Every part is important. 26. How to express the 'Objective' part? should it be 100% serious, down to business, or can it have any informal elements?
