I. Objectives

b. Describe the characteristics of
a living organisms
II. Materials
- pen and paper
- science garden
- drawing materials
III. Procedure
1. Explore the school’s science garden and list
down at least 10 living organisms that you can
see.
2. Observe their activities…list down things
that they have in common.
3. Answer the following guide questions:
1. What do living things have in
common?
2. How can you differentiate a living
thing from a non living thing?
3. From your list of living things. Think
on how they continue to live? Are
there specific activities that they
need to do in order for them to
continue living/survive? What are
those?

Life Processes:
Response to stimuli
Metabolism
Adaptation
Growth
Reproduction
Response to Stimuli
Living things
respond to external
factors that may
affect them, such as
light, sound,
pressure, and
temperature.
Stimuli (stimulus)
Any change in the
environment,
and/or
surroundings
Can be: chemicals,
gravity, darkness,
light, sound, or
temperature.
Do plants respond to
stimuli?

Growth in response to
stimuli:

Metabolism
Process that involves all changes
within an organism in which
energy is released or used
Includes breaking down of food,
building body parts, releasing
energy and removing waste

that allows an
organism to survive
successfully in its
environment.
“Homeostasis”
Homeostasis
Even though an external
environment of an organism
may change, the organism
must maintain a stable internal
environment to survive.
Reproduction
A process by which living
things produce the same
type of living thing.
What life processes are
involved in the following
activities?

____A frog eating an insect
____A plant producing a seed
____A plant bending toward a
window where there is light.
Describe at least five ways in
which you can tell a living from a
non living thing.
Name some stimuli in your
environment. How do you
respond to these stimuli?
