17. PART- C
St. Michael's Primary School
(The written proposal)
After studying the six buildings in the ‘+10 Years, +100 Buildings ‘ book, a prominent feature/ functional idea
comes up – to be explained further – which will serve as a good proposal to St. Michael's Primary School.
If you take a look at the photographs surrounding this text, you’ll notice their current play area, there are a
number of unsafe and inappropriate elements to any child’s play area. Here is a list of some:
1. I notice that the slide, swings and maybe a few other things are broken/ damaged. This is very hazardous as
they can easily hurt themselves.
2. The play area is situated on a sandy patch. This can be very messy, where in summer dry sand/ dust may
dirty their school uniforms, etc.; and in winter or rainy days sand becomes muddy (which is even messier).
3. The form of the current structure can often become very boring to the children. It’s a long structure,,
colourless (it blends too much into its surroundings) and it has very little activities that could be done in
this play area.
However, there are advantages to the play area as well:
1. The shade of the existing trees cover the entire play area. This serves as a good protection against the sun.
2. The materials used for the current play area can be recycled. Therefore, if we decide to make a new play
area, we can reuse these materials.
My proposal:
To recreate a play area for these children.
To give them something ‘new’ and fun.
To give them a durable structure, so that students to come will also benefit from it.
To ensure that ‘play’ is a big/ important part in their growing experience.
