So you’ve seen other bartenders engaging in the art of “Flaring” and you too would like to try it
as a way of boosting your tips. Well the art takes many hours of practice so it’s best to do on
your time off rather than in front of customers on a busy night.
It is advisable to start with one bottle and work your up to as many as you can “juggle”.
However flaring involves more than just “flipping” a bottle, it takes skill and patience to become
a good flare bartender. A good idea is to begin practicing with empty bottles first, after all you
don’t want to waste an entire bottle of alcohol. Bartenders can then begin incorporating the
metal cocktail shaker into the flaring tricks as they become more confident with bottles.
So begin practicing your first flare as follows:
Grip the neck of the bottle with your dominant hand, thumb up, keeping a loose grip on
the bottle and getting a feel for its weight.
Practice by flipping the bottle either sideways or forwards.
Swing the bottom of the bottle upward with a sweeping motion
Let go of the bottle when you can feel it swinging on its own. Let the bottle do a full
revolution in the air.
Then catch the bottle. In time you will learn to do this with one hand.
With a little practice and determination you too could be drawing in the crowds and maximising
your tips with your artistry and flaring skills.
